  2. SKILL LEVEL SHIFT OVER TIME/EXPERIENCE Click on the heading to go back to the title slide Industry Knowledge Expert Advanced Accounting Principles Good Excel Skills Average Low You are not expected to be an industry stud at the start of the game You are expected to get good at it as you grow. Try and work with multiple industries to know your likes You probably would have found your sectoral expertise by now You learn as you grow, especially by seeing live trends in the industry and how the real business works Your discussions with clients and colleagues focus on industry updates more than accounting or excel riddles Often analysts start getting focussed on specific sectors at this juncture

  3. SKILL LEVEL SHIFT OVER TIME/EXPERIENCE Click on the heading to go back to the title slide Industry Knowledge Expert Advanced Accounting Principles Good Excel Skills Average Low You got to at least start with being good at excel At this level being just good is not enough, you have to be very advanced at excel based financial modelling Now excel skills take a dip here, primarily because you are not required to work with spreadsheets anymore. You have excel jockeys doing the job for you Often at interviews excel and accounting skills are tested more than anything else You would also notice that probably your successful boss with 10+ years of experience knows no shit about excel, but can point your model mistakes in his dreams. Well that is called industry experience! I have seen and myself coached junior analysts on modelling tricks and excel based challenges

  4. SKILL LEVEL SHIFT OVER TIME/EXPERIENCE Click on the heading to go back to the title slide Industry Knowledge Expert Advanced Accounting Principles Good Excel Skills Average Low You got to be not good but advanced here They still remain critical since you still work a lot on spreadsheets along with interacting with clients Just like excel skills, accounting skills take a dip too but not too much since they are critical while understanding structuring of transactions etc.. Accounting skills matter a lot and being killer at them makes your job easier at the start
