    3. What Materials Do You Have? 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens – paperback book (called “Teens Book”) – this book is the school’s copy Ultimate Guide to Success – workbook –this is yours to keep and write in

    4. Meet and Greet Write three things on your name tent (3 minutes): • Your Name • Your favorite Food • Your favorite thing to do or something you are good at Now, tell your neighbor about the activity you chose and why

    5. Question? What are the biggest challenges you face In your life?

    6. Success Guide Turn to Page 5 in your Ultimate Success Guide (workbook) Learn It, Live It, Give It

    7. Question? What are habits?

    8. Teens Book Turn to Page 8 of the Teens Book Need a volunteer: Please read the sentence under “What Exactly Are Habits?”

    9. Activity Work with a Partner: Make a list of the “good” habits you have acquired and discuss these with a partner.

    10. Question? What is “effectiveness”?

    11. Effectiveness “Effectiveness is habitually doing things that help you to get great results over and over again. Effectiveness is tied directly to habits. If you form good habits and use them over and over again, you will be more effective.”

    12. Reflection Think about some habits you have right now that make you effective in your life? Write your responses on Page 6 (bottom of page) in your Success Guide (workbook)

    16. Activity Who can name any one of the 7 habits? There could be candy involved in this . . .

    17. Teens Book Turn to Page 7 of your Teens book. Silently read “The 7 Habits of Highly Defective Teens” Think about “what are some of the bad habits you are practicing right now?”

    19. Teens Book Turn to Page 33 of your Teens book. Need a Volunteer to read the poem.

    20. Questions? What did the Anglican bishop want to change? Why do people want to change other people instead of themselves? Who in our lives do we have the power to change?

    21. Teens Book Turn to Page 34 in your Teens Book Needvolunteers to read the symptoms of a Poor PBA and Symptoms of a Healthy PBA. Look on p. 35 at Examples of PBA deposits and withdrawals

Activity Listen to the following statements and write down: +5 for deposits-5 for withdrawals • You promised yourself you would set some time aside to study for a big test, but you didn’t • You told your mom you would empty all the garbage when you got home, but you never did it • You stood up for a friend when someone was being unkind • You were too hard on yourself when you didn’t get an “A” on a test because you knew you had done your best • You took the time to rest rather than go to a party when you knew you were tired • You stopped taking music lessons, even though you know you have talent • You came home and told your dad you scratched the car, even when you knew he’d probably never find out that you did it • You never told anyone when you found out your friend was using drugs and was really getting hooked • You kept saying no when you were being pressured into having sex before you were ready

    23. Question? When you are at a deficit, what are some things you can do to bring you back to a positive account balance? (what are some things that you can do to help when you are feeling low on confidence)? Write responses on page 11 (journal space)

    24. Habit 1 Be Proactive

    25. Success Guide Turn to Page 14 in your Success Guide (workbook) Need a volunteer to read the definitions of proactive people and reactive people on page 14 (inside the binoculars)

    26. Activity Listen to the following statements and decide which person should shake up his or her bottle: “Reactive” or “Proactive” • Your sister ruins your favorite shirt and you storm into her room screaming at her • Your best friend says something that hurts your feelings and you decide he must be having a bad day, so you blow it off • Somebody cuts you off in traffic, so you flip him the bird • Your teacher makes a really ridiculous comment in front of your friends so you yell at him and tell him to leave you alone • Your parents won’t let you take the car—again. You stomp off and slam the door to your room • Your little sister keeps asking you to read to her and you don’t want to, but you decide to do it anyway • You feel like you’re being scheduled for too many long shifts at work, but instead of complaining to your co-workers, you talk to your manager • Someone offers you drugs and you say no. • Your mom says, “We need to talk,” and you say, “not now,” because you KNOW it’s going to end up in an argument.

    27. Activity – Success Guide Read the following scenario: You overhear a friend of yours bad-mouthing you in front of a group. He/She doesn’t know you overheard the conversation. Just five minutes ago, this same friend was sweet-talking you to your face. You feel hurt and betrayed. At the bottom of page 16 in your Success Guide (where it says Journal) Write 2 proactive responses and 2 reactive responses to this scenario. Share your responses with a partner.

    28. Questions? Which responses would you rather choose: proactive or reactive? Why? What are some real life situations in which you have acted proactively?

    29. Pause, Think, and Do Pause - Stop immediately Think – Think about how you want to respond Do – Do the most proactive thing

    30. Success Guide Turn to Page 16 in your Success Guide (workbook). In the Journal space provided, take a couple of minutes to write down: One thing you will do this week to begin making more proactive choices.

    31. Review Who can remember what Habit 1 is? Who can remember what Habit 2 is?

    32. Habit 2 Begin with the End in Mind . . . Choose your direction based on the outcome you want

    33. Question? Why is it important to begin with the end in mind? What ways do you Already begin with the end in mind?

    34. Activity Ask yourself these questions: • What have you done with your life over the past year? • How do you feel inside? • What do you look like? • What characteristics do you possess?

    35. Teens Book Turn to Pages 81 and 82 in the Teens book. What is a Personal Mission Statement?

    36. Activity – Success Guide The Great Discovery (pages 21 -23 in Success Guide Workbook) 7 minutes – answer questions as honestly as you can

    37. Success Guide Turn to Page 24 in your Success Guide (workbook) Begin your first draft of your Personal Mission Statement. In 5 minutes, capture your thoughts about some of the things you would like to include in your Personal Mission Statement. Write or draw nonstop for the full 5 minutes. This is just your first draft

    38. Final Thoughts What have you learned today? What will you begin doing this week? What do you hope to accomplish in school this year? Make sure to keep up with your workbooks – you will use them throughout the year in school
