  2. So you wanna learn about linear equations?

  3. The Meaning of Algebra Tiles This yellow tile represents a POSITIVE one. This red tile represents a NEGATIVE one. These are constants.

  4. This is a MYSTERY NUMBER. Since we don’t know the value of it, it is called X. X Tiles ? This is also a MYSTERY NUMBER, but it is a negative X.

  5. Additive Inverse Additive Inverse: A pair of numbers or expressions to a sum of zero. Example: If Johnny had one apple, and Bobby took it away, Johnny has ZERO apples. That process is called ZEROING OUT. Therefore, if you have a positive One Square and subtract One square Square, ,(or add a negative that equals the same value.)

  6. This is an EQUATION BOX! You put tiles on both sides of the boxes. They represent an equation. This line means the equal sign (=)

  7. Example... This is just a POSTIVE 2. This is a POSITIVE 2x 2X = 2 This Means:

  8. Another Example... This means it’s a Positive 2X minus a Negative 1 This Equation means 2X-1= X-1 There is a NEGATIVE X in this box, plus the Negative 1.

  9. We now have to find out what X means in an equation. If the equation is: 3X+5=20 Then what do you do?? SIMPLIFY ! Take away 5, or add a negative 5 (-5), on both sides to ZERO OUT. Remember-Keep the scale BALANCED!

  10. Are you PAYING ATTENTION?

  11. Here the equation, 3X+5=20, is on the equation box. After taking five away from each side, this is what we have.

  12. Finally,we split them into two groups. Now you can see that in the boxes, there are 3 different groups with one in each group so equals 5! X X

  13. When “X” is on both sides of the equation……….. *You always want to get rid of negatives first. 2x-4=x+3 In order to solve this equation you need to zero out. So, you add four to each side of the equation to get rid of the –4.

  14. Try this one on your own! 2x-4=X+3 This is how it looks on an equation box! Remember zeroing out and getting the x off the right side as a priority!

  15. Let's Check our Answers! Remember to ZERO OUT all of the X’s first, then the NUMBERS! The answer is... X=7 Let's Review! Now how did we figure that out?

  16. This equation will NOT be able to split into even groups. So, we take a different route. Great Job! We start this equation by subtracting or adding a negative X to each side because of the X on the right. Then you begin zeroing out: X-4 by adding 4 to each side of the box. Now we have X=7

  17. Here is a little harder equation... 2 (2x+4) = -8 The dotted line shows that there are TWO groups of 2x+4

  18. To get rid of the 8 squares on the left, to get the X's alone, you have to add a negative 8, or subtract 8 from both sides. Your equation, is 4X=16 now, since they are even, put them into four equal groups.

  19. Answer- X= -4

  20. Now You're catchiing on!

  21. Now how will you ever be sure that your answer is right? There is a way to check your answer! Next slide….

  22. Here’s an even equation! harder 3X+1=X+5 Remember to use additive inverse when trying to find out what X means. Grab a Piece of Paper and Try it On Your Own!

  23. Part of the problem should look like this when worked out. 3X+1=X+5 -1= -1 3X=X+4 Now to zero out the X’s, you have to subtract an X from each side, to make sure that only one X is left on one side. We aren't done yet-next slide please!

  24. The rest of the problem should look like this: 3X=X+4 -1X -1X 2X= 4 We zeroed out the X = Then, since the X is multiplied by two, you divide both sides by two to zero the 2X out.. 2X=4 2X/2=X 4/2=2 Therefore, X=2
