  3. Common Symbol Examples in Life: Peace Democracy or Freedom Love or Beauty Hope or New Beginning

  4. Common Symbol Examples in Literature- COLOR: Red- immoral, blood, emotion, passion Blue- cool, calm, peaceful Green- inexperience, hope, new life, immaturity

  5. Common Symbol Examples in Literature---NATURE: Trees- Wisdom or Knowledge (apple- temptation…) Spring-birth, Summer- knowledge, Autumn- decline, Winter- death Water washes away guilt or brings life… Flowers- beauty, youth, gentleness Sun- source of heat, light, masculinity Moon- changing and returning shape, feminity Weeds- evil/death, wildness Hemlock- death

  6. Symbolism • Take three minutes to • write down some descriptions of the word symbolism. These are YOUR OWN ideas, not someone else’s, so DON’T TALK about them yet. • jot down related terms • draw a picture/symbols that you think relates to the term (and can help you remember the term)

  7. What is the purpose of a symbol? • Writers use symbols to: • Emphasize or bring meaning to their writing. • Use something concrete (something real) to stand for something abstract (a concept or idea)

  8. How do I recognize a symbol when I read? • Object, place, event, or person appears in the text • Often, it is repeatedly mentioned in the text. • Characters respond to the object, place, event, or person • Object may connect to the theme or main idea of the text
