New DFG/CMP protocol • New this year • Escapement estimate based on redds • Determine geographic distribution of redds using GPS and analyze with GIS • Still focused on chinook and coho, not steelhead, for same reasons • Survey location selected at random from sampling frame • Consistent protocol across ESU • Protocol designed by DFG with peer review

  4. The Sampling Frame • Created in GIS • Separate frames for chinook and coho • Based on gradient, discharge, historical records, and past MSG data • Reaches are based on existing access points and length • Areas with no access are excluded

  5. Other Changes • Two protocols • Access to HRC lands • GPS units • Handheld data loggers
