Project Overview (1/6) • Project launched in the frame of Euro-Med GNSS I Programme: • GNSS Regional Plan (Activity A) • Training and Awareness (Activity B) • GNSS Services Demonstration (Activity C) • GNSS Signal In Space provision • METIS Objective: Promotion of GNSS services in the MEDA area, paving the way for GNSS services in MEDA • METIS duration: 30 Months (started mid of July 2006) METIS contract METIS – 1st GNSS Regional Plan Workshop, 12th July 2007, Casablanca Technopark - Morocco

Project Overview (2/6) • METIS countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian Authority, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey • METIS Team: • Euro-Med Consortium composed by 5 partners, TPZ (coordinator - I), FDC (F), ESSP (B), AUI (Mo), TAS (F) • More than 20 subcontractors (mainly MEDA) involved in activity A, B or C • GEMCO involved as subcontractor for activities B and C METIS – 1st GNSS Regional Plan Workshop, 12th July 2007, Casablanca Technopark - Morocco

Project Overview (3/6) • METIS outcomes: • Contributing to the definition of Euro-Mediterranean policy and actions in favour of the GNSS (EGNOS/GALILEO) services market in MEDA • Establishing cooperation and shared objectives between EU and MEDA economic actors supporting such a policy • METIS key activities: • Activity A - A Euro-Med “GNSS Regional Plan” preparation (Leader: TPZ) • Activity B - Running a “Training & Awareness” programme (Leader AUI) • Activity C - Implementation of 10 “GNSS Service Demonstrations” (Leader: ESSP) METIS activities are performed in parallel with the relevant infrastructure preparation for GNSS SIS (Signal In Space) Provision Activity in the region, undertaken by the European Space Agency (ESA) METIS – 1st GNSS Regional Plan Workshop, 12th July 2007, Casablanca Technopark - Morocco

Project Overview (4/6) - “GNSS Regional Plan” • Development of a plan for the GNSS Service implementation: • In the ten MEDA countries • For the different user/application domain • With a 5-10 years long scenario • From the initial introduction of EGNOS to the further addition of Galileo • To ease the introduction of GNSS services • GNSS Regional Plan: • Defines opportunities and assesses policies • Sets priorities and necessary actions in favour of a progressive GNSS services market implementation • MEDA actors involvement is a key element for a shared Euro-Med “GNSS Regional Plan” • Links with related initiatives in the region is fundamental METIS – 1st GNSS Regional Plan Workshop, 12th July 2007, Casablanca Technopark - Morocco

Project Overview (5/6) - “Training & Awareness” • Development of customised training and awareness plans: • List of MEDA Point of Contacts (PoCs) • List of media relations (channels for project promotion - MEDA/International) • Training needs and tools identification • Training and communication material production • Launch of dissemination and promotion activities • Education and training plan implementation • Dissemination tools: Web Site (En., Ar., Fr.), Newsletters, press releases, … • Close cooperation with GEMCO • Supporting Activity A in the Regional Plan preparation (events, PoCs) • Supported by promotion & training within Activity C METIS Training & Awareness is a key element for MEDA actors involvement METIS – 1st GNSS Regional Plan Workshop, 12th July 2007, Casablanca Technopark - Morocco

Project Overview (6/6) - “GNSS Service Demonstration” • Enabling “GNSS Service Demonstration” in the regions • Supporting Activity A in the Regional Plan preparation, as straightforward and practical way to: • Improve co-operations with actors already initiated/facilitating establishment of new ones • Ensure involvement of regional and local actors in METIS • Supporting Activity B for training material and PoC list population MEDA actors participate and validate METIS service demonstrations, through direct involvement in the demonstrations and promotion events METIS – 1st GNSS Regional Plan Workshop, 12th July 2007, Casablanca Technopark - Morocco

METIS Points of Contacts (1/3) • Key factor towards METIS establishment of common interests and shared objectives for a GNSS Mediterranean policy: • Inputs/Feedbacks • Validation/Guidelines • Promotion • A “live” METIS PoC list created and populated with “selected” actors from the ten MEDA countries, interested in the development of GNSS services and diffusion of GNSS knowledge: • National Coordinators of Transport GNSS programmes • Institutions and Local Authorities • Users from different application sectors • Technological companies (digital maps producers, devices and Information Technology developers) • Service Providers • Universities and research institutes METIS – 1st GNSS Regional Plan Workshop, 12th July 2007, Casablanca Technopark - Morocco

METIS Points of Contacts (3/3) Activities inter-relation & METIS PoCs involvement/contribution: • METIS Activity A performs the necessary task for the elaboration of the MEDA GNSS Regional Plan • Its outputs are promoted and disseminated through METIS Activity B awareness • Its work takes as input: • The results from GNSS service case studies implementation and validation in different application domains and use scenarios, carried out in Activity C demonstrations • MEDA actors inputs and feedbacks gathered through interviews, dedicated forums and workshops, to ensure the GNSS Regional Plan is defined upon a shared Euro-Med strategy and policy for the GNSS service market METIS – 1st GNSS Regional Plan Workshop, 12th July 2007, Casablanca Technopark - Morocco

METIS Demonstrations (1/2) • Implementation of GNSS Service Demonstrations Setting up and execution of 10 demonstrations, covering 9 MEDA countries and different application domains • 4 “Wide-Area Demo” for sub-regional applications • 6 “Local-Area Demo” for national applications • METIS GNSS Service demonstration objectives: • Demonstrate GNSS benefits in real user case / operative scenarios • Validate EGNOS in various application domains vs. MEDA regional needs • Cover all MEDA region Countries • Maximise the involvement of key local actors in GNSS service pilots • Provide tools for the local exploitation and promotion of GNSS capabilities A review of the “user needs” gathered from MEDA actors involved in demos will be done through questionnaire/interviews, following test/practical use of GNSS services in the different application domains METIS – 1st GNSS Regional Plan Workshop, 12th July 2007, Casablanca Technopark - Morocco
