  2. Background Information:Childhood • Henri Cartier- Bresson was born on August 22, 1908. • He was the oldest of five children • His father was a wealthy textile manufacturer and his mother’s family cotton merchants and landowners in Normandy where he spent part of his childhood. • His family lived in a bourgeois neighborhood in Paris, near the Europe Bridge.

  3. Background Information:First camera/ Interest in photography • He owned a box brownie camera to take holiday snapshots • Later experimented with a 3x4 view camera, and he also liked to sketch. • After studying painting, Henri attended the University of Cambridge from 1928 to 1929. • After completing his service in the French Army, he was arrested for hunting without a license. • Henri met an American expatriate who pursued officers to release Henri from custody for a few days. • They both realized their mutual interest in photography and spent their time taking pictures of Crosby’s home.

  4. Background Information:Photography style • He was an early adopter of 35 mm format, and the master of candid photography. • He helped develop the “street photography" or "real life reportage" style that has influenced generations of photographers who followed.

  5. Background Information:Photography Opinion • Personally I liked Henri’s style of taking pictures. I really like how in his street photography photos they are of everyday life and they look really interesting. • I really enjoy his photo Allé de Prado, Marseille took in 1932 because of the trees in the background. • I also like to take pictures in this style.
