Modern Japan

China and Japan Notes: Day 2

why did japan bomb pearl harbor
Why did Japan bomb Pearl Harbor?
  • By 1941 the Japanese, at the height of their power, saw war between themselves and the U.S. as inevitable. Reasons…

1. The U.S. had cut off oil and many other exports to Japan amidst the war because of their actions with China and Germany.

      • 80% of Japan’s oil at the time was from the U.S.

2. The U.S. had also been putting troops in the Philippines for years, something the Japanese saw as a threat.

3. Finally, the U.S. moved their main naval base from San Diego to Pearl Harbor.

  • All of these things the Japanese perceived as a threat.
    • The U.S. (mistakenly) assumed the Japanese would attack the Philippines first, and weren’t strong enough to attack twice!
