  1. One-Step Equations with Addition November 7, 2011

  2. Vocabulary • Equation- a mathematical sentence with an equal sign • Inverse- opposite • Ex: The inverse of addition is subtraction • Solve- to find the solution to a problem

  3. Goals of One-Step Addition Equations • Get the variable on one side and constants on the other (x by itself) • Keep the equation balanced at all times • USE THE INVERSE OPERATION TO SOLVE AND STAY BALANCED

  4. Steps to Solving • Get the variable alone on one side of equal sign • Use inverse operations to cancel and solve • Leave, add, opposite • Check the solution by using substitution x + 5 = -27 x is not alone - 5- 5Use the inverse to x = -32 cancel and solve. -32 + 5 = -27 -27 = -27 - 4 + x = 10 x is not alone +4+4Use the inverse to x = 14 cancel and solve. -4 + 14 = 10 10 =10

  5. Example: x + (-16) = 34 • Example: - 6 + x = 33
