History of the Taipei School for the Hearing Impaired • 1917 – Founded and named Kimura Blind and Deaf School • 1920 – Renamed to Private Taipei School for the Blind and Deaf • 1928 – Renamed to Taipei State School for the Blind and Deaf • 1945 – Renamed to Taiwan Provincial Taipei School for the Blind and Deaf • 1962 – Renamed to Taiwan Provincial Taipei School for the Blind and Hearing Impaired • 1967 – Renamed to Taipei Municipal School for the Blind and Hearing Impaired when Taipei became a municipality that same year • 1975 – Renamed as Taipei School for the Hearing impaired when the government built a new school for the blind that same year.
Current and Past Principals • Mr. Kimura Kingo, Lin Wen-sheng, Koe Chau-chou, Chen Shia, Chang Hsiang-hsian, Chang Ming-huei, Lin Jong-lian, Wei Ruei-jing, Chen Shiu-rong and our present principal is Dr. Lee Rong-huei (Aug. 1, 2004 to present)
Goals of Dr. Lee Rong-huei, principal of the Taipei School for the Hearing Impaired • Developing an adaptable education that aims to achieve respect, sympathy, love, confidence, health and hope in each and every student. • Constructing an intimate, inclusive barrier-free campus that promotes a harmonious learning environment. • Establishing multifunctional partnerships between students and society. • Giving inspiration to students to cultivate themselves and expand their horizon in order to become citizens that contribute to today’s society. • Intensifying educational opportunities for foreign exchange.
Curriculum for each grade level • Kindergarten • Includes: Pre-school, first, second and third grade kindergarten • Educational Aims: • Developing residual hearing through early intervention • Enhancing oral teaching to improve children’s verbal expression and thinking abilities • Developing abilities for sensory integration • Nurturing interests in reading • Creating positive living habits
Curriculum for each grade level • Elementary Division • Educational Aims: • Acquiring basic academic skills • Developing residual hearing, enhancing aural-oral habilitation, building language and communication abilities • Fostering life education; learning to adapt to basic living
Curriculum for each grade level • Junior High Division • Educational Aims: • Expanding basic academic skills • Enhancing language and communication skills, and improving adaptation of living • Building confidence, health and independence • Cultivating abilities in social adaptation
Curriculum for each grade level • Senior High Division • Educational Aims: • Establishing students’ academic skills as a basis for college education • Furthering language and communication skills • Solidifying concepts of law and morals • Encouraging students to pursue higher education
Vocational Senior High Division • Educational goals: • Acquiring vocational skills and establishing life-long learning and developing a prospective career.
Department of data processing • Word-processing in Chinese and English, Adobe Photoshop, Internet basics and multimedia.
Department of fine and applied arts • Two and three-dimensional courses, including applied arts, carpentry, goldsmith and ceramics.
Department of home economics • Culinary skills from traditional Chinese dishes to desserts and baking, arts, crafts, sewing and cosmetics.
Department of Graphic Communication Arts • Courses in photography, serigraphy, commercial printing, web designing and bookbinding.
Environment • The school is located at Sec. 3 of Chung-ching North Rd, neighboring with Taipei Confucius Temple, Pao-An Temple and Laoshi Fu Mansion • The administration building divides the field into inner and outer portions. The north and south rows are multi-functional classrooms. The north row includes a cafeteria and dormitories for out-of-town students; the south row contains factories. • The campus is spacious to provide teachers and students with an environment that fosters broadness and openness.
For the future… • To renovate and expand the north classroom building • To establish a community college in order to broaden their potential • To build numerous factories for impaired students to work, devote themselves and contribute to society. • To continue to uplift students moral and educational integrity
