  1. Introduction The American University in Cairo is an English-based Institute of higher education that aims to create a liaison between the Cultural perspectives of the East and the West. AUC takes great pride in helping students become familiar with the Arabic Language requirements and Regulations. Since Arabic Language Requirements are Mandatory all Undergraduate students are committed to fulfill them in order to satisfy the Graduation Requirements.

  2. The Arabic Language and Literature requirements a student must satisfy to complete graduation requirements starting Fall 2004 are as follows:Depending on the type of Secondary School certificate and/or placementexamination results:

Thanawiya Amma Holders are not required to take any language course, only one Arabic Literature course from the following: Arabic Studies 201,202, 299, 301, 302, 303, 304, 306, 307, 308, 309, 311, 312, 313, 314,315 and 316. (Thanawiya Amma holders should not take Arabic Studies 203,204 or 310; they will be considered non credit).

  4. Non Thanawiya Amma Holders who passed the Governmental Part Two Thanawiya Amma Arabic administered by the Ministry of Education are not required to take any language course, only one Arabic Literature course from the following: Arabic Studies 201,202, 299, 301, 302, 303, 304, 306, 307, 308, 309, 311, 312, 313,314,315 and 316. (They should not take Arabic Studies 203,204 or 310; they will be considered noncredit)

  5. IF Non Thanawiya Amma Holders who passed the Governmental Part Two Thanawiya Amma Arabic administered by the Ministry of Education choose to take the Arabic Literature course in translation(As Arabic Studies 203,204 or 310); they should sit for Arabic placement exam to specify their level and either take one, two or no language courses according to the result of the Arabic placement exam.

Holders of all other Certificatesshould sit for an ArabicPlacement exam and follow one ofthe following requirements depending on the results scored in the exam: Take one Arabic Languagecourse out of the following list: ALNG 101,102,103,109,110,201,202,203,204,111,112,211 and 212. Take one Literature coursein Translationout of the following list:ARBS 203, 204 & 310. Total hours will be 6 credit hours. OR 2. Take twoArabic Language courses out of the following list: ALNG 101,102,103,109,110,201,202,203,204,111,112,211 and 212. Take one Literature course in Translationout of the following list:ARBS 203, 204 & 310. Total hours will be 9 credit hours.

  7. Non Thanawiya Amma Holders that are classified under one of the following:

Holders of IGCSE that passed Arabic First Language and scored a grade of "C" are exempted from Arabic language courses but must complete One Literature course in Arabic or in Translation from the following: 201,202, 299, 301, 302, 303, 304, 306, 307, 308, 309, 310, 311, 312, 313, and 314,315 and 316. ARBS 203, 204 & 310.

Holders ofother certificates that sat for an Arabic Placement exam and scored the level of Thanawiya Amma holdersare exempted from all Arabic language courses but must complete One Literature course in Arabic or in Translation from the following: 201,202, 299, 301, 302, 303, 304, 306, 307, 308, 309, 310, 311, 312, 313, and 314,315 and 316. ARBS 203, 204 & 310.

  10. Transfer Students:If either Arabic Studies 201ORArabic Studies 202 is transferred No Language courses are required. AND The Arabic requirement is fulfilled by the transferred course.
