  3. 1 1 – Brief Introduction • Drivers: • Need to know the extent and impact of technical innovation in Portugal; • Lack of comparability with Europe. • Time Frame: • Reference Year = 1997 • Work = 1998; INE database = 1996 • Publication = 2000

  4. 2 2 – Methodology and Sample Selection • Eurostat Rules. • Measures to ensure validity and statistical weight. • Both Industry and Services were surveyed. Universe of companies = 15.599 Initial sample = 4.000 Targeted economic activity classifications (CAE) Effective sample = 3.416 Final sample = 1.837 (11,8% of Univ.)

  5. 3.1 3 – Data Collection • Mail Inquiry • Advantages: Less costly, Faster • Disadvantages: Lower rate of reply, qualifications of who answers, little knowledge on misunderstandings • Form preparation and cover letter • Help-Line made available • Second mailing for non-answers • OVERALL AROUND 70% OF ADDRESSED COMPANIES WERE CONTACTED BY PHONE

  8. 4.2 European Innovation Profile • INDUSTRY - More innovative countries have higher innovation rates in SMALL FIRMS comparing with the European average. • SERVICES – Innovation rises with the size of the company.

  9. 5.1 5 - Conclusions Extent of technological Innovation in Portugal Portugal has a lower innovation rate compared with the European average, which is supported on: Portugal doesn´t behave as other european countries, where small companies has the higher innovation rate as well as being the new ones.

  10. Resources allocated to Innovation The share spent on R&D and the verified Innovation activities can not be directed related in Portugal, due to: • Considering that 70% of the expenditures are applied in machinery and equipement. • group 1 and group 2, can not be related, however they have the higher I&D expenditure. • Human resources can not be directly related in both sectors with innovative activities.

Innovation Objectives • Mainly, product quality, market increasing and costs reduction, which is shown by the massive investment on machinery and equipement. • Focused on new products/services, that need an higher inovation rate. • Industry search for productivity increasing and Services for market expand/wide range of services. • Europe is more products/services replacement focused.

Cooperation and Innovation Sources • Information Sources: • - for big companies company internal sources • and othercompanies within the same group. - company/university cooperation is found at a low level, once that companies doesn´t consider relevant the universities as information source. - Innovation and cooperation is linked to industry, mainly at the client and supplier level.
