Introduction – Hook, Background, Thesis Every spring, when the weather begins to turn warm, and the red breasted robins appear, many people begin to think about planting a garden. Even if a family has limited space, planting a garden is important. Choosing the plants, preparing the soil, and caring for the crop involve the whole family and result in good food and a sense of fulfillment.
Paragraph 2 – Transition, topic sentence, 3 details and explanations The first step in planting a garden is choosing the plants, and everyone in the family should have a say in this so that each person has ownership in the garden. According to the SC Department of Agriculture, South Carolina ranks “at or near the top nationally” in production of collards, kale, turnips, mustard greens, tomatoes and watermelon (“Fruits and Vegetables”).
Clemson University says that all vegetables look beautiful in catalogs, but if a family does not eat them the garden is wasted (“Planning”). In my family, everyone loves tomatoes and cucumbers, my grandsons love corn, and my husband loves jalapeño peppers. All of these vegetables can be planted in late April or May so that they can be enjoyed in the summer and fall. We also love lettuce and it should be planted in March (“Planning”). Picking out plants is fun for everyone, and Lowes and the local feed and seed store have lots of varieties.
Paragraph 3 – Transition, Topic Sentence, 3 details and explanations The next important step in planning a garden is preparing the soil. Everyone can be involved in this, even little ones who love to dig in the dirt. ****Add details and explanations about how the soil should be prepared.
Paragraph 4: What would your opposition say ? Give reasons why caring for a garden is beneficial. Some people would rather go to the grocery store for their vegetables, but they do not realize that caring for a garden can be fun and satisfying. Gardens must be watered, weeded, fertilized, and protected from insects, and everyone in the family can share in the care and in the final harvest. Watering is the most important. According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture, “It is much better to give the garden a good soaking about once a week than to water it sparingly more often. Light sprinklings at frequent intervals do little, if any, good” (Wester and Kehr). Everyone in the family can water and tend the garden and later enjoy the fruits and vegetables that they produced.
Paragraph 5 – ConclusionRestate the Thesis and add an emotion appeal Clearly, a garden is great for every family. Choosing the plants, preparing the soil, and caring for the crop can involve the whole family from toddlers to grandparents. The result is good food and a sense of accomplishment. If you have not tried growing your own vegetables, try it this year. One bite of your own homegrown tomato will win you over.
