    3. Just a brief history about me Raised in LA Juvenile Detention, Probation Camp, and CYA . Grace of God – great career Took early Retirement Chaplain Volunteer at Four facilities Also a FB Mentor at the Ayres House and with SA Parole I titled this presentation Gateways to TYC I minister to a lot of youth in the county systems on the way or returning to TYC from the county JJS - JDC and County Correction/treatment Just a brief history about me Raised in LA Juvenile Detention, Probation Camp, and CYA .     6. Forgiveness for Sins – Most pressing relieve their guilty conscience – Question - Will God forgive any Sin? Feel a Separation from God – Berlin Wall Story Love and Acceptance Most Youth have not had the experience of one loving parent much less two Love and Acceptance are related to Forgiveness – I am not a lovable person because I do bad things Hope for a Future – Its Difficult to Get Youth to Understand that God has a Plan for their Life. Especially when they have been Abused and neglected all their lives – But they want to believe it! Forgiveness, Love, and Hope for a Future are so inter connected that you can’t address one w/o addressing the other two. Authenticity – Dictionary uses words such as Real – Genuineness – Not false – Truthful, and Faithful Mahatma Ghandi said, I like your Christ but . . False Expectations – God will do anything ask if only I have enough faith! Story about volunteers suspended. Not all prayers are answered yes. Prayer – The Great privilege - Talking to God Our Spirit to His Spirit Most appreciative thing I do is put aside my agenda and pray for them You have influence because God will listen to you Gospel – The Gospel is the Penicillin for the Soul It is the resource to satisfy the need for forgiveness, the need for love and acceptance, and the need for hope for the future The Holy Bible My word will not return It touches places that no human hands or reasoning can because it is food that nourishes their spirits. It is the greatest book on mentoring that has ever been written - Power for change Comfort and Courage Relieve Anxiety and Depression The Bible is a Book about Hope for the Future Faith Based Mentors – I am pleased to see that the Texas Youth Commission has a volunteer job description for FB Mentors. It is clearly an affirmation of the contributions religious volunteers have be doing since the inception of the volunteer program. Double Dynamic a caring person to provide guidance to a youth coupled with the Spiritual Resources to Minister to the deepest hurts in soul. The combination of the two has a synergistic effect that can help produce remarkable results. Share my fears and doubts about Mentoring? Summary – But All these resources are powerless to effect change without the dynamic working of God’s Holy Spirit guide and illuminate our actions.     9. Sharing the Gospel Ask the Audience to identify What Do they Have in Common? Hold up Book to audience to See It is the Gospel that will tear down the Wall they have built between themselves and God. Separating themselves from God. If you were like me I never thought I’d ever see the Berlin Wall come tumbling down, much less be holding a piece of it in my hand. When God decides to work in a youth’s heart he tears wall of separation down piece by piece. come tumbling down and He uses the Gospel to do it! Summary A final thought on Spiritual Needs and Spiritual Resources While any Spiritual Resource can be used to meet any spiritual need there does seem to be priority and a sequence in applying these resources. For example Prayer and the Gospel > best meet the need for Forgiveness The Gospel > satisfies the need for Love and Acceptance And The Bible > provides wisdom and encouraging words for a Future Last, Godly Mentors act out the spiritual principles embodied in the Bible, bringing an authenticity to the message and provide role models for these to pattern their lives after.Summary A final thought on Spiritual Needs and Spiritual Resources While any Spiritual Resource can be used to meet any spiritual need there does seem to be priority and a sequence in applying these resources.
