  1. Aliens from Space Could you survive a strange new environment?

  2. Create your ‘alien self’ • Take out a separate sheet of paper. Title “My Crash-land on Earth” • Given the traits, choose which traits you want for your “alien self.” • Write down your ‘alien name’ and genotype and phenotypeusing the trait key.

  3. You have crash landed on Earth! • Aliens with birthdays Jan – April land in the Amazon (South America) • Characteristics: • Hot/Humid • Very diverse, (lots of plants and animals) • Rains everyday • Very tall trees with little sunlight • Aliens with birthdays May – August land in the North Arctic • Characteristics: • Very cold and dry • Very little diversity with no trees and short little plants on the ground • Rocky or frozen ground • Long days. Long nights. • Aliens with birthdays Sept – December land in the Sahara Desert (Africa) • Characteristics: • Very hot and dry • Little rain • Short plants, few animals • Lots of sand and sun.

  4. Your Environment Using your knowledge of the environment you landed in, list things you will do to survive (using ONLY the traits you choose) • What will you eat? • Where will you live? • How will you protect yourself from predators? • Which traits do you have that do not help in your environment?

  5. Population Count • Create a chart to keep up with the population of your Alien people for the environment.

  6. Analysis - Construct a Graph • Construct a graph that describes your data population chart. • ex:

  7. “Death” comes a knocking! • “Mother Nature” (me) will take course. Answer the following questions for each generation. • Discussion questions: • What traits led to the death of individuals in your environment? Why? • What traits led to the survival of individuals? Why?

  8. Conclusion questions: • What were some of the environmental pressures or limited resources that caused some of you to die? • Which traits helped others to live? • Could you have survived in a different environment? Why? • How do you think the alien population would look in 100 or 1000 years?
