  1. NDK Anime Conference 2011 Medical Support Revised 9/6/11

  2. Special Considerations for NDK This is NOT boy scouts…different folks…different venue…different politics This is first aid…medicine is medicine This is a quick response area We are NOT running a community clinic…this is first aid and band aid/tylenol This is NOT our party…we are just a small part of a larger staff that has been around for years

  3. AMT Procedures Use standard procedures and organization Duty Officer will probably go to most significant treatments as they will resolve away from clinic This will have more AMT adult presence than a Camporee / Klondike (to provide adult backup and support to Explorer providers).

  4. Hotel Secuity Marriot security will have 1-2 on duty. They work closely with NDK Safety. They are very happy with our services in the past. Always act professionally, both on and off duty.

  5. Theft This is a different crowd then boy scouts Laptops, projectors, money, wallets, medical toys, anything is at risk of theft Keep valuable stuff in bags at clinic (only we will be back there) Safeguard AMT equipment It won’t get stolen if you don’t let them steal it!

  6. Universal Precautions Have gloves on you and use them Stay out of sneeze and cough zone Frequent hand washing, even if no patient contact…there are many germy bodies Touching the same door handles you are Keep clinic surfaces wiped down with disinfectant Report contamination issues We call hotel for vomit or blood on floors (for cleanup)

  7. Ambulance and Police For ambulance calls we will notify hotel security who will make the 911 call and arrange for the arrival and movement of the ambulance. Police requests go to hotel security and make sure NDK safety is notified. If unsure about police calls notify NDK safety and defer to their judgment

  8. Safety Codes • AMT members and NDK Safety will use these radio codes: • RED – fire or fire hazard • BLUE – victim not breathing • ADAM – missing child • BOWSER – drunk and disorderly person • PAUL BUNYAN – violent person

  9. Female Issues Defer to female medics if available Be sensitive to possible female question if first contact is made to male medic Provide hygiene products if asked Don’t get sidetracked by possibility of female issues for generic symptom like abdominal pain…treat this as a unisex complaint <grin>

  10. NDK Costumes Hot costumes will cause of dehydration and heat injury No happy scissors unless this is a major illness/injury…remove costume without damage if possible Don’t let costume distract from proper assessment…a heart attack can cause folks to be sweaty and faint, too.

  11. Treatment Areas Treatment will usually have to happen in place…it makes no sense to bring a cut to the clinic. Duty Officers need to go to any significant incident to supervise treatment Have supplies delivered to patient if appropriate (you need something not in a vest) Helping patient back to their room may be a logical option…don’t forget PCR for later checking by phone or in person

  12. Unexpected Helpers NDK staff includes medical folks who may help…welcome them EMTs/Nurses could appear as helpers Your competence is the primary key factor in getting help instead of interference Once an EMT/Paramedic/Nurse interacts with patient and ambulance is called they may have to continue until they are relieved by ambulance

  13. Alcohol Alcohol might be used by some participants Use first aid techniques as you have been taught…this is just another first aid condition Legal drinking age is NOT our concern…just treat the patient…we also do not report underage drinking if seen...defer to the safety staff…we are there to fix busted people and not to be police Hostile behaviors: Stop care and contact safety staff via radio…let them deal with it.

  14. Illegal Drugs Not expected to be a significant factor at this event Treat the patient and not the drug problem If illegal drugs are found during treatment we will pass the word to the safety staff (do so w/o the patient knowing) Hostile behaviors: stop care and contact safety staff via radio…led them take the lead…they are very experienced at how to handle these folks

  15. Legal Drugs Make sure SAMPLE catches which meds are in use…did they take their meds? OTC med issue MUST be approved by AMT member over 18…NO EXCEPTIONS OTC meds must be logged (if not on PCR)…NO EXCEPTIONS

  16. Squabbles Under no circumstance are we to jump into a confrontation…back off! Get safety staff involved. Be prepared to handle the results…bloody nose, black eye, cut knuckle, bruises Pull in more medics for moral support (and protection) Watch patient carefully and treat gently…they have already demonstrated they will fight Keep combatants out of sight of each other afterwards if we are treating both

  17. DTC Marriot – Our Host This is not our activity and not our property DTC Marriot will monitor our activities through the security staff Usually hotel reports will go through our communications and clinic In almost every case do what hotel staff tells you to do (unless there is a clear medical necessity)

  18. Politics of Medicine at NDK DTC Marriot is very happy with our previous performances. Treat all hotel staff with courtesy. Recognize the security staff and say hello to them. No unprofessional conduct at any time, and especially in uniform / on duty. No problems with AMT volunteers who are off duty (even in civvies).

  19. Fun When you are “off duty” you may change into civilian clothes Wear your badge (medical badge) at all times You are not required to carry your radio off duty This is official AMT activity so no booze for our adults Your badge will get you into every room without charge – don’t abuse this please

  20. Food Bring $15 cash upon arrival which will pay for your food for the entire time. The food room will be the Concierge Room on the first floor Atrium. If you want to bring stuff for yourself do so We will have fridge and coffee in our room (bring you own mug if you are big coffee hound) Wendy’s and a Mexican restaurant is across the street.

  21. Radios Radios are signed out to members. Do not leave your radio anywhere except on you, in your personal gear, or at the charging table. Take the opportunity to charge your radio when you are off duty or in the clinic.

  22. Billeting Females use back room with one Queen bed All members bring a sleeping bag or a blanket with pillow No cots…we will sleep on floor Bring a towel, personals, and shampoo Keep bags in back room if not in use (more secure)

  23. Parking No charge to just drop someone off at lobby entrance Normally $10/day to park in hotel lot, butEd has free passes so you don’t have to pay on way out There is no nearby parking that is not the hotel that we have found yet

  24. Clinic Keep personal items packed at all times We will be in room 550 in the atrium Don’t let Uno games and lounging trash the clinic…professional appearance at all times…clean up immediately after use Put everything away when you are done Restock supplies immediately…let medical officers know ASAP if you need something

  25. Secondary Clinic Security will have a command post on the second floor of the North tower, Room 2024. We will put AED, cut kit, and backboard there We can use that room for treatment if needed

  26. Have a good time !
