  1. My Last Duchess LO: To explore character of the Duke

  2. Read The Last Duchess on your own and write down ten words that describe the Duke in 60 seconds.

  3. There are some parts of the poem which aren’t easy to follow straight away because the poet is hinting, rather than just saying how he feels. a. For each of the following phrases, give your own explanation of what the Duke is really thinking as he speaks. You can discuss this with your partner. - ‘since none puts by/ The curtain I have drawn for you, but I’ - ‘Even had you skill/In speech – (which I have not)’ - ‘I choose / Never to stoop’ - ‘Then all smiles stopped together’ - Nay, we’ll go / Together down, sir’

  4. Write a character study of the Duke, in 50 words or less, which describes the sort of man he is and the way he speaks.

  5. How do we know that the Duke thought that it was beneath him to talk to the Duchess about her behaviour? Support your answer with lines from the text. • Which lines can you chose to reveal the cruetly of the Duke? How would he say the words, ‘I gave commands’ to the envoy?

  6. Imagine you are the Duchess before she was murdered. Write your own dramatic monologue which reveals your thoughts and feelings. • How did she REALLY behave? • What was the Duke really like towards her? • Was she lively and interesting? • Could the Duke not control her behaviour? • Did she suspect he was going to do something to her? • Write in first person!!!
