  2. Three Main Parts • Heart • Blood • Blood Vessels

  3. The Heart • Human beings have a four chambered heart: two atria and two ventricles. • Located in the thoracic cavity, behind the sternum, and between the lungs. • The function of the heart is to pump blood throughout the body. • It is the center organ of the circulatory system.

  4. Blood Vessels • Arteries- carry oxygenated blood away from the heart • Capillaries- from the arteries the blood goes through smaller vessels called capillaries. At the capillaries the exchange between the blood and the cells of the body occur • Veins- from the capillaries the blood goes into the veins. The veins carry the blood back to the heart

  5. Blood • Red Blood Cells- responsible for carrying oxygen and carbon dioxide • White Blood Cells- defend the body and fight off pathogens • Platelets- fix blood clots and repair damaged tissue

  6. Things That Can Go Wrong • Blood Clots • Heart Attacks • High Blood Pressure • Lymphedema • Buerger’s Disease • Varicose Veins
