  1. Carnival in Netherlands – One of the Most Unique Dutch Festivals The exciting Carnival in the Netherlands which also goes by the name “vastenavond” happens to be one of the most popular events in the Netherlands. This spell-binding event will be held from 27th February to 1st March 2022 in the Southern and Eastern regions of the Netherlands. Curious to know what this festival is all about? Then read on to find out! Origins of the Netherlands Carnival Festival Originally, the Carnival of the Netherlands was a pagan holiday. However, during the earlier times, the Catholic Church added this event into their calendar as an additional festival that will lead up to Ash Wednesday. This is followed by Lent and the fasting period before Easter.

  2. Earlier this festival was celebrated throughout the Netherlands. However, after World War II, Carnival in the Netherlands is usually celebrated in the North Brabant and Limburg which are basically Catholic provinces. What is the Carnival in the Netherlands 2022 all about? The Carnival of the Netherlands is a unique festival that breaks the traditional norms of revelries. At this festival, the two most important things are as follows: Suspension of Social Norms – This means the normal rules that you see on a daily basis will not be followed as the mayor himself will give the key of the city to someone who gets nominated for the 3 days of the festival. Prince Carnival – This is the person who will get the keys to the festival. Role Reversal – Almost everyone will get dressed in ecstatic outfits for these three days Amazing Attractions of the Netherlands Carnival Festival Witness the Prince of Carnival The Prince of Carnival is a key attraction of the event as he will be the one who will get the keys to the city from the mayor for the next 3 days of the festival. The Prince usually roams around the city and tries to pump up the Carnival spirit.

  3. Normally, the Prince of the Carnival is someone important in the city like a businessman or a person in power. They can be easily recognizable as they normally wear tuxedos and a hat that features a rare bird feather. Parades will be filled with Carnival Floats Carnival floats are some of the biggest attractions of the parades. Each city has numerous clubs that create the floats and bring them to the parade. The members of the clubs often wear the same type of clothes to stand out from the rest of the crowd. The locals consider it an honor to host the float in the city parade. Live Music from Dutch Carnaval Brass Bands Enjoy some amazing music from the Brass bands in Brabant as they perform in the streets and during the parade too. They usually wear the same costume and perform traditional Dutch music.

  4. Best Places to Celebrate Carnival in Netherlands Maastricht Did you know? One of the largest celebrations of the Carnival in the Netherlands happens in Maastricht. So, head over to the central Vrijthof square if you are visiting Maastricht to celebrate the Carnival. And as mentioned earlier, Maastricht gets renamed Mestreech during the festival. So, don’t miss this event if you are in Maastricht! Breda The Grote Markt and the surrounding areas will be hosting the revelries of the Carnival. Breda gets renamed as Kielegat during the festival.
