You are probably much more familiar with the coffee pod. Depending on the brand, they are made of aluminum or plastic to house the coffee grounds and sometimes a filter. Capsule machines produce espresso-style coffee, like Nespresso, or drip coffee with brands like Keurig. You may hear them called coffee pods, coffee pods, Nespresso pods / pods, or K cups.

  1. All You Need to Know About Coffee Pods In an ideal world, you could use any coffee pod in your home pod machine. This would give you access to hundreds of flavors, strengths, and styles of coffee on offer, at a variety of prices. Sadly, this is not the case, and once you buy a machine, you are restricted to one type. Coffee capsule vs coffee capsule If you think that coffee pods and nespresso compatible pods are the same, think again. But on the other hand, you are also right. These two terms should refer to different things, but in reality, they are often used interchangeably. Confused? We will explain it to you. Coffee capsules A coffee capsule or pad is a prepackaged dose of ground coffee in a paper filter such as a round tea bag. These come in two types: soft and hard. The mild style is used to make drip coffee in a variety of non-pressurized machines (but not Keurigs). The tough type is used to make espresso in pump machines and is also called Easy Serving Espresso (E.S.E) capsules. Coffee capsules You are probably much more familiar with the coffee pod. The problem arises because many people call Nespresso capsules “capsules”. If you want to buy coffee capsules or pads, you will probably have to specify exactly what you are looking for. Coffee Capsule Compatibility The most frustrating thing about using capsules is that you are locked into the ones that fit your machine. Nespresso might have pioneered the idea of the single-serving machine for home use, but now the brand has plenty of copycats, each with their own capsule "system." Even the types of Nespresso capsules vary with their different machines, like these. A particular type of capsule may have the potential to be used in different machines. For example, original Nespresso capsules can also be used in Wacaco'sMinipresso brand. However, a machine from the original Nespresso line will not be able to accept any other type of capsules. The bottom line: pod systems are not interchangeable. If you're having trouble deciding which capsule machine to buy, check out our recommendations.

  2. You may often see a comparison between pods and K-Cups. While most capsules simply vary in shape and size, K-Cups are designed for a different extraction method. Instead of espresso-style coffee, Keurigs (and therefore K-Cups), create a drip-style brew. Soft coffee pods are also used for drip coffee, but are not interchangeable with K-Cups. Reusable coffee capsules Coffee pods and pods can be quick and convenient, but they have their downsides. One is that they are not prepared with freshly ground coffee, another is the cost and, finally, there is the waste they cause, particularly with the capsules. The solution to these problems are reusable or refillable capsules. These are made of plastic or metal and are simply empty pods that you fill with your own coffee as needed. As with regular capsules, you will need to find a brand that is compatible with your particular machine. Final thoughts If you are going to buy a single serving machine, you will need to think carefully about what kind of capsules are available. And if you already have a pump espresso machine, why not try a coffee pod?
