  1. Tape Challenge

  2. Question How do differences in surfaces affect the adhesiveness of tape?

  3. Purpose • The purpose of this project is to determine how differences in surface affect the adhesiveness of tape. This is important to know because we want to know which surface to hang a poster and it will stay in place.

  4. Hypothesis We hypothesize that the tape will stay on plastic the longest. We believe this because it is smooth.

  5. Procedure

  6. Materials • 420 CM OF TAPE • GLASS SURFACE • SPRING SCALE • PLASTIC SURFACE • METAL WASHER TO BE USED • WOOD SURFACE • METAL SURFACE

  7. Variables • MANIPULATED/INDEPENDENT: SURFACE • RESPONDING/DEPENDENT:AMOUNT OF WEIGHT HELD • CONSTANT: METHOD OF MEASURING, WEIGHT HELD BY ADHESIVE, SIZE OF TAPE

  8. Directions • 1. CUT ONE PIECE OF TAPE 21 CM LONG • 2. STICK THE TAPE TO PLASTIC WITH SPRING SCALE ATACHED • 3. HOOK THE LARGE PLASTIC CONTAINER TO THE HOOK OF THE SPRINGS SCALE • 4. RECORD AMOUNT OF WEIGHT HELD • 5. REPEAT STEPS 1-6 USING METAL • 6. REPEAT STEPS 1-6 USING WOOD • 7. REPEAT SEPS 1-8 FOR MORE TRIALS

  10. Conclusion Our hypothesis was incorrect. The metal held on the most weight instead of plastic. Metal held a average of 32.4 washers ,glass held 25.6 washers, wood held 16.8 washers, and plastic held 14.4 washes. Plastic was the lowest. We also learned that the temperature of the air affects the tape. We realized that the temperature may have a affect on the tape’s sticking ability. We need to find a way to control the room temperature for all the trials.
