Everything about Helmsman

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) runs a large number of training courses and these can be taken at various places around the country when organised by people who have been authorised by the RYA. The RYA itself says that its' internationally recognised training courses successfully see a quarter of a million people passing them every year, and whether your objective is to spend quality down time cruising the canals, to travel, to work, to advance your career, or to compete in racing, they have a course that will fit your needs perfectly. Motor cruisers have accommodation and cooking facilities, so you can live on board and enjoy a degree of comfort while afloat. The very basic course is called Start Motor Cruising and is for people who it is assumed have no knowledge whatsoever. The minimum age for the course is just 8. It is an entry level course and can be run in conjunction with higher level courses for groups of mixed ability. It is for introducing friends or family members to crewing a motor boat and providing them with an understanding of how they be of use to the helm. It includes personal safety, seamanship, dealing with emergency situations, coming alongside, picking up a mooring, and boat handling, and enables course attendees to be able to be a useful crew member and help the helm. The next course up is the Helmsman course and is described as a useful course for new owners who are aware of the problems and hazards of handling a boat in a marina. It is also a useful course for crews as well as skippers because there are obvious safety benefits if people on board can handle the boat in addition to the skipper. This is a two-day course and the minimum age is 12. It covers types of craft, engines and drives, engine operation and maintenance, boat preparation and handling, safety and seamanship, the rules of the road, securing the boat to a buoy, berthing alongside, and recovering a man overboard. After completing the course, attendees will be competent in handling a boat in sheltered waters. For many people helmsman gifts ideas who only want to skipper a boat inland on the canals, rivers, or other waterways such as the Norfolk Broads, the Helmsman course will be sufficient, but for those who want to put to sea there are many other RYA motor cruiser training courses. The next one is the Day Skipper course which requires you to have at least two days experience on a motor cruiser, and also assumes you understand the Day Skipper theory. For this you need to attend the shore-based course before taking the practical course. The course is over four days and the content is preparation for sea, boat handling, navigation, pilotage, passage making, meteorology, rules of the road, engines, emergency situations, and night cruising. The next course is Advanced Pilotage which is for people who want to improve their skills at night pilotage but are not yet ready for the Coastal Skipper course. It runs over two days, including one evening, and enables attendees to undertake more advanced passages by day or night. It includes the use of radar, night cruising, dealing with adverse weather conditions, and dealing with emergencies. The next course is Coastal Skipper, and this requires that you have attended the shore-based course at this level so that time is not wasted on board teaching theory. The course runs over five days, and the minimum age is 17. It also requires you to have 15 days experience at the previous level, two days as skipper, and having covered at least 300 miles including eight hours by night. After completing this course, you may wish to undertake the Yachtmaster exam. For this there is no formal training, but provided you have sufficient experience and sea time you can put yourself forward to take the exam to gain the Certificate of Competence which is recognised worldwide. There are many types of boats such as, fishing boats, sports boats, cruise boats, family boats, dinghies etc. Usually we use small boats for shallow water while larger boats are meant for deep water. Mostly boats are used either for fishing purposes or sports or just for getting away on a lake or sea with family or friends. For different types of usage, different types of seating arrangements are required. While we need boat seats with less gadgetry for passengers in a boat, the speedboat and powerboat seats require lots of precautionary steps to ensure the safety of the skipper/helmsman as well as his companions. It is essential that the boatman must keep
the boat steady under any circumstances for climatic conditions in open water as they may suddenly change without warning. Thus develops the need of very good boat seats for the skipper as also for all companions. You can buy boat seats loaded with protective measures to face any contingency arising whist navigating the waters. Have boat seats with good suspensions having variable tilting, absorption of shocks and jolts occurring during steering it. Boat seats must have extra padding for comfort of the occupant & provide a cozy feeling. The material normally used in manufacturing the boat seats should be weather proof & long lasting to face exposure to heat, saltwater, snow, windy conditions and humid weather. Boat seats may have head rests, arm rests and seat belts to provide comfort and security to the skipper or occupant. Boat seats can be acquired according to your budget. So choose one with care and advice. For tuck seats the need is for providing driver comfort and ease during long driving hours. Trucks are leaden vehicles moving on the roads from smooth roads to rocky and winding hills. Choose truck seats with good suspension, shock absorption and control ease. The truck seats must conform to requisite safety measures like safety belts, tilt adjustment, back and head rests with humidity, heat and cold controlling system so that the driver should feel relaxed while driving and also not fall asleep. You can visit any of the truck seat shops and select one which suits your needs.
