What is an EDOK? • Expert Distiller of Knowledge • The goal of a research process should be to synthesize a new understanding of the text through blending your own impressions with the reflected commentary of an academic source. • Your process should carefully consider the construction of the author’s argument and effectively evaluate its validity. • The EDOK structure will help you to do this!

  5. STEP ONE: Selection & Analysis • PRODUCT: Annotated Literary Criticism • Read the text carefully. • As you read, annotate directly on your copy of the selection. • Label each section or stage of thought. • Mark any passages that state the selection’s main point.

  6. STEP TWO: Outline • PRODUCT: One-page outline of criticism’s argument • Step One: Reread each paragraph to identify the topic of the paragraph and what the author is saying about the topic. Take a few minutes to create a one sentence summary of each paragraph. • Step Two: Thoughtfully craft a one-sentence summary of each major section or stage of thought. These one-sentence summaries should be in your own words. • Step Three: Using your one-sentence summaries of the main sections or stages of thought in the text, write a brief informal sentence outline of the text. Under each main idea, briefly indicate the specific support the author uses to back up his or her ideas.

STEP THREE: Synthesis & Evaluation • PRODUCT: One-page summary of the essay • Step One: Write an introduction to your summary which includes the following: the full name of the author; a brief description of the author’s credentials (if available); the title of the selection; the topic of the essay; and the rhetorical situation (purpose and audience). • Step Two: Distill the content of the original selection to its main points and recompose these ideas into your own piece of writing, using your own words and syntax. Write for a reader who has not read the selection.
