Nyilas: Hungary’s fascist party • Fascist party: political party supporting brutally oppressive, dictorial control of public speech and civil rights • yellow star: palm-sized patch centered with a hexagram; Star of David; 6 pointed shape composed of 2 triangles superimposed; one point up, one point down; today it adorns the flag of Israel • boches: derogatory name for Germans; means hardhead

Kapo: German term for guards chosen from prisoners themselves; often more cruel than SS officers • meister: German for “master” • Aryan: statuesque, blond, and blue-eyed; according to Hitler all other races were inferior • Logerkapo: German for “head of camp” • pipel: German for “young apprentice” or “assistant” • SS men: “Schutz-Staffel” Hitler’s black-shirted bodyguards

  4. Dr. Mengele: selects those too weak for service to death • Gestapo: secret police; most hated and feared of German terrorists • Achtung! German for “Attention!” • memoir: comes from the word “memory”; Wiesel is telling this story from his memory • anti-Semitism: prejudice against or hostility toward Jews as a group
