  2. Abraham Harold Maslow Abraham Harold Maslow was an American psychologist who was best known for creating Maslow's hierarchy of needs, a theory of psychological health predicated on fulfilling innate human needs in priority, culminating in self-actualization.

  3. WHY MASLOW came up with a hierarchy of needs • Maslow wanted to understand what motivates people. He believed that individuals possess a set of motivation systems unrelated to rewards or unconscious desires • Maslow (1943) stated that people are motivated to achieve certain needs. When one need is fulfilled a person seeks to fulfill the next one, and so on.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs • Physiological Needs– the most basic needs to survive. • Security Needs –needs for safety and security. • Social Needs – needs for belonging, love, and affection. • Esteem Needs – need for things that reflect on self-esteem, personal worth, social recognition, and accomplishment. • Self-actualization Needs – people are self-aware, concerned with personal growth, less concerned with the opinions of others, and interested fulfilling their potential

WHY MASLOW’S Hierarchy of Needs IS IMPORTANT FOR MANAGER • As a manager, it's important to understand that these needs are the major motivating force behind workers. • Goal as a manager, they should be to ensure that their workers are getting those first three stages of needs met. If they do, their employees will be happier, more productive, and can able to come up with new innovations and ideas that could help the company to become success.

  7. S u m m a r y • Hierarchy of Needs is a motivational theory in psychology that argues that while people aim to meet basic needs, they seek to meet successively higher needs in the form of a hierarchy.

  8. Clayton Paul Alderfer Clayton Paul Alderfer (born September 1, 1940) is an American psychologist who further developed Maslow’s hierarchy of needs by categorizing the hierarchy into his ERG theory (Existence, Relatedness and Growth).

  9. ERG Theory • Existence needs (physical well-being) • Relatedness needs (satisfactory relations with others, including co-workers) • Growth needs (development of competence and realization of potential)

  10. How erg theory helps to become a better manager? • Reminds managers that everyone isn’t motivated by the same things. • People at the top are more likely to motivated by self-actualization/growth needs than existence needs.

  11. WHY ERG THEORIES DIFFER FROM MASLOW’S THEORY? • ERG theory allows for different levels of needs to be pursued simultaneously. • Allows the order of the needs to be different for different people. • Acknowledges that if a higher level needs unfulfilled, the person may regress to lower needs.
