  4. Inspiration • Research in Bariloche, Argentina 11 years ago • Witnessed about 200 kids rummaging through the dump trying to find food and things to sell • The kids were as young as 3 and as old as 12 years old • Her son was about the same age as many of them

  5. The Problem A big number of kids in Argentina are forced to quit school to help out their families They spend the day searching through garbage, this is their job They miss out on a proper education which every child needs

  6. The solution • PETISOS which stands for Prevention and Eradication of Child labour SOS • Provides children with a free education • Also offers extracurricular programs so they don’t have to go work at the dump • After school workshops are available too • Open to anyone • They have a tracking group • Psychologists, doctors and social workers are also available to work with the children and their families • The parents/guardians also receive job training and get parenting support

  7. Accomplishments Today over 200 kids and families benefit from PETISOS Many of the students have gone on to finish school and have started families of their own

  8. impact PETISOS has helped over hundreds of children and families out of poverty Elena’s program has help set an example for how to raise children and it has helped break the habits of an upsetting childhood, and helped kids grow in a safe environment

Why I chose her as my hero • Went out of her way to help people she didn’t know • Put others first • Helped out because she wanted to not because she was forced to • Didn’t get anything out of it ,such as money, she did it for satisfaction • Saw something that wasn’t right and set out to fix it • Changed the lives of hundreds of people • Courageous
