An applicant may major in the discipline of his/her choice; however, all applicants must complete the following: BiologyOne academic year of general biology or zoology with lab Chemistry One academic year of general / inorganic chemistry with labOne academic year of advancedchemistry, two quarters or onesemester of which must be organic. Georgia Health Sciences University Medical College of Georgia The other quarter or semester may be fulfilled by any advancedchemistry course (lab not required).Biochemistry is strongly recommended. Physics- One academic year of physics w/ lab English- One academic year of Englishor whatever portion in the academic year is required for the baccalaureate degree in an accredited college or university. -

  30. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Applicants are required to complete at least 90 semester hours (or 135 quarter hours) of a balanced undergraduate education from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or Canada . Completion of the baccalaureate degree is highly preferred. Minimum course requirements include:Physical Science        8 semester hours (with lab) Biology                                     8 semester hours (with lab) Chemistry                                8 semester hours (with lab) Organic Chemistry               8 semester hours (with lab) English                                    6 semester hours Humanities/Social Sciences 18 semester hours Science course requirements are intended to demonstrate a sound knowledge in each of the basic science areas. We expect medical school students to have a strong foundation in these areas, prior to attending medical school. An applicant’s GPA in the sciences is carefully considered, although not weighted. The English requirement is intended to demonstrate competency in grammar and composition at the college level. Literature courses may be used to fill the English requirement if the course was writing-intensive.

  31. Premedical RequirementsBefore beginning study at Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM) all accepted applicants must have completed successfully, at least three years of course work leading to a baccalaureate degree, and one-year laboratory courses in biology, inorganic or generalchemistry, organic or organic: biochemistry sequence, and physics.Accepted applicants who have not fulfilled these requirements prior to the first day of enrollment are not permitted to enter and their acceptances are revoked. No particular major is specified, but the Admissions Committee does urge applicants to seek a broad background in humanities and social sciences.

The premedical studies required for admission are set in order to provide the student with a firm grounding in subjects considered essential for the study of medical sciences, to provide the Committee on Admissions a means to evaluate aptitude for scientific work, and to determine interest in the sciences.The following courses must be included in undergraduate study: Biology w/laboratory (one year) General Chemistry w/laboratory (one year) Organic Chemistry w/laboratory (one year) Physics w/laboratory ( one year)College level Mathematics (one year) English (including composition) (one year)

  33. Biology A minimum of 8 semester hours, including laboratory. Chemistry A minimum of 16 semester hours including laboratories, 8 in inorganic chemistry and 8 in organic chemistry. English and Composition A minimum of 6 semester hours in English literature and/or writing. Physics A minimum of 8 semester hours, including laboratory. Advanced placement credits, CLEP credits and pass/fail creditsare notacceptable in lieu of ANY required courses. Advanced courses in the same discipline may be substituted for the requirements when the applicant has placed out of the entry level course.

  34. Academic Requirements Applicants must present evidence of superior intellectual ability and scholastic achievement as demonstrated by their academic record and performance on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Required course work includes a minimum of one year in biological science, general or inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physics and mathematics through calculus, including integral equations and differentialequations.Statistics may be substituted for one calculus. Although many applicants will have majored in one of the natural sciences, applications from those who have majored in the humanities or social sciences are equally welcome.

  35. REQUIREMENTS Prior to matriculation each applicant must meet the following admissions requirements:  1. A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Applications from students with at least three years of exceptional undergraduate work will be considered.  2. Eight semester hours each, including two semester hours of laboratory: general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology and physics.  3. Six semester hours of English composition and literature.  4. Each applicant must sit for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).

  36. Completion of the following science courses: a). One academic year* of general biology or zoology with lab b). One academic year* of general/inorganic chemistry with lab c). One academic year* of advancedchemistry, one semester (or two quarters) of advanced chemistry which may be organic chemistry with lab followed by either (a) a second semester (or third quarter) of organic chemistry with lab or (b) a second semester (or third quarter) of biochemistry (biochemistry lab not required). d). One semester (or two quarters) of physics with lab e). One academic year* of English or English for the portion of the academic year required for the baccalaureate degree at an accredited American college or university. All required courses must be taken on a graduated grading scale (A, B, C, D, F); required courses may not be taken on a pass/fail basis. Applicants must earn a grade of C or better in all required courses. Other suggested courses (not required) include biochemistry, comp anatomy with lab, microbiology, marketing, personnel management, psychology or art classes requiring painting or sculpture. College of Dental Medicine For entering 2015, biochemistry will be a required prerequisite.

  37. Students should have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. In addition, students should have a science grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a four-point scale. Students must have earned a grade of 2.0 or better in each of the following required courses:General biology - eight semester-hours including laboratory(zoology and microbiology are acceptable alternatives) General chemistry - eight semester-hours including laboratory Organic chemistry - eight semester-hours including laboratory Physics - eight semester-hours including laboratory English composition - three semester-hours English literature - three semester-hours ADDITIONAL REQUIRED COURSES******Two of the following advanced science courses must be taken: Biochemistry - Cell or Molecular Biology - Genetics - Histology - Human or Comparative Anatomy - Microbiology - Physiology

Financial Support for Medical School via Military Note: UGA has both Air Force ROTC and Army ROTC Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) Financial Incentives • What does the scholarship pay? • 100 percent tuition • Books, fees and more • Monthly stipend of over $2,000 • Officer’s pay (six weeks of year) • Promotions (initially commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Medical Services Corp during studies) To qualify for HPSP: • Be a U.S. citizen (cannot hold dual citizenship) • Be enrolled in or have a letter of acceptance or intent from an accredited graduate program located in the United States or Puerto Rico • Maintain full-time student status during the entire length of the program • Meet the moral and physical qualifications to become an Army officer
