Rationale • Strong strategic case: • Small businesses are crucial to the economic development and growth of Scotland • Unfulfilled entrepreneurial potential among younger people • Lower business start-up rate for younger people than any other age group • Drive to build an Enterprise culture in Scotland

Rationale (cont) • Demand for a qualification in Enterprise and Business at SCQF level 6 • Primarily suit candidates aged 18-24 in school or FE but also those who are: • Interested in business • Adult returners to work • Re-training for employment • Considering a change of career and may be considering self-employment

  4. Aims • Enhance and develop enterprising skills and attitudes • Develop knowledge to support business start-up activity • Develop knowledge and skills in promoting a business • Enhance and develop knowledge of customer management techniques • Provide practical, experiential learning about starting a business and transferable skills for employment • Enable progression within the SCQF • Provide the opportunity to develop Core Skills.

  5. NPA Content and Structure • All Units are mandatory • 5 NQ credits required to achieve NPA

Business Formation: An introduction Content • Introduce a broad range of topics key to business formation • Carry out basic research on sources of help • Investigate the viability of a business idea • Produce an action plan Assessment • Portfolio to gather evidence of work • Practical assignments • Present idea to a panel, action plan, risk assessment

  7. Business Skills and Behaviours Content • Identify the skills and behaviours necessary for success in business • Provide a framework for personal development Assessment • Portfolio to gather evidence of work • Self assessment checklist • Personal development pan

  8. Business Formation: Commercial Aspects and Law Content • Legal characteristics of different business models • Contracts • Sources of legal assistance Assessment • Portfolio to gather evidence of work • Investigative task • Research project

  9. Finance and E-Business Content • Sources of funding • Financial management • Use of Internet for business transactions Assessment • Written/oral evidence • Portfolio to gather evidence of work • Practical tasks and investigations • Cash forecast • Product Listing
