FEATURES AND USAGE OF WINDOWS PE • Can be used in a variety of settings • Bootable from CD-ROM, hard drive, or UFD • Bootable over network with Preinstallation Execution Environment (PXE) • Less than 250MB compressed • Boots fast <= 1 minute on contemporary machine • Uses RAM disk, very small memory space needs (512MB) • Allows access to hard drives • Format and manipulate without rebooting • Provides temporary storage space to applications • Can load drivers, network components and APIs

  7. THE RECOVERY ENVIRONMENT • Windows PE with recovery extensions • An image on installation media called WinRE.wim • Added to hard drive as recovery partition • System Recovery Tools package: • SRT package found in the OEM Preinstallation Kit • SRT package not found in WAIK! • Can be extracted from the installation media

  8. USE WAIK TO CREATE CUSTOM WINPE 3.0 • Extract & prepare WinRE.wim • Copy and mount Install.wim from installation DVD • Extract out WinRE.wim, unmount Install.wim • Mount WinRE.wim, add additional tools as desired • Unmount WinRE.wim • Extract an unaltered WinPE, copy prepared WinRE.wim as boot.wim into WinPE

  9. USING WAIK TO CREATE THE CUSTOM WINDOWS PE ISO DEMO

  10. BOOTING FROM A CUSTOM WINPE 3.0 UFD WITH RECOVERY TOOLS • Prepare and partition UFD • Copy altered WinPE to UFD • Boot into recovery environment with UFD

  11. UFD CREATION AND USING CUSTOM WINPE TO RECOVER AND REPAIR DEMO

  12. USING WINPE TO PERFORM OPERATING SYSTEMS MIGRATIONS • Imagex.exe • Boot to capture a master image • Boot to deploy an image

  13. USING WINDOWS PE TO CAPTURE AN IMAGE OF A WINDOWS 7 MACHINE AND DEPLOY AN IMAGE TO A BARE METAL MACHINE DEMO
