  1. z Reading Newsletter March 2014 Catch up with Mrs. McCollum’s • Hello Curious Campers! • Wow! We have certainly had some winter weather! I apologize that the January and February newsletters did not get sent out as expected. I do have hard copies of both months and can send one home with your child if you request, in your child’s agenda. I will also be posting them to our class website online. • This month in reading, we will use text features to generate questions and locate the answers in texts such as Pop! A book about Bubbles and Snails. We will also be continuing this skill in our NC Ready Test Practice, alternating NC Ready lessons with the Making Meaning lessons each week for guided and applied reading instruction. • Last month, your child proclaimed a reading level goal and brainstormed how to continue their growth in reading. I challenge you to ask yourself, how am I keeping my child accountable at home for their reading growth? Fluency practice pages are best read to someone who can time them for 1 minute, several times a night. These are on your child’s reading level. I will also be sending home small books from our small groups in reading comprehension as we finish them. These can be read together or have them read aloud to you. These are also on their reading level. Sign the back of these books and for every 5 signatures your child gets for reading this to someone, they will get a “sea-sational” ticket to turn into the office for a treat! • Hopefully this month we can stay warm and cozy! Please contact me at timaramccollum@wcps.org if you have any questions or concerns!
