  1. Japan • Japan felt that they had the right to start an overseas empire, just as European countries such as Britain and France had. • In 1931, Japan seized Manchuria, China, for its valuable coal and iron.

  2. The League of Nations failed to help China. • In 1937, Japan began an all out attack on China, eventually conquering Korea and French Indo-China as well.

Attack on Pearl Harbor • The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise military strike conducted by the Japanese navy against the United States' naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941, later resulting in the United States becoming militarily involved in World War II. It was intended as a preventive action to keep the U.S. Pacific Fleet from influencing the war Japan was planning to wage in Southeast Asia against Britain and the United States.
