  1. Compassionate ActivismOnline Seminar – Session 2 Please join us as we wait for the other participants to arrive. We will begin shortly at 6 pm EST / 3 pm PST.

  2. Questions from Session 1 • Compassionate Activism Model • Overview of the Five Practices • First Practice of Humility and Curiosity

  3. Choose a Situation • Select a recent specific situation that is somewhat emotionally charged for you but not extremely charged

  4. #2: The Practice of Distinguishing Realities and Acknowledging External Reality

  5. Distinguishing Realities • Three Realities • Your internal reality • The other person’s internal reality • External reality

  6. Naming External Reality • External Reality Consists Of: • Words • Actions • Energy

  7. Reflecting on Your Reaction • Share briefly what you normally think and talk about regarding the situation. • With the help of your partner, identify what parts are make believe.

  8. Reflecting on the Situation: • Describe what was said and done in that specific situation between you and the other person(s). Focus on the words and actions only. • Ask your partner to point out if there were any assumptions you made about the situation and/or the other person’s internal reality in your description. • Keep paring down your description until you and your partner feel like it’s just composed of the words and actions.

  9. Acknowledging External Reality • Acknowledging external reality as it is and as it is not • Accepting reality is different from saying it’s acceptable

  10. Reflecting on Your Reflections • What gets in the way of you acknowledging the situation as it is and as it is not? • What do you gain from resisting the reality and focusing on make believe? • What’s the impact on you when you don’t acknowledge the situation as it is?

  11. Reflecting on Acknowledging as Acceptance • Share “I accept that they said X.” • What and how is it different for you when you just focus on the words and actions and accept that they happened as such – and not as you wished had happened?

  12. Closing Takeaways • If you could remember just one thing from today’s session, what would it be?

  13. Next Session Wednesday, April 20th 6 pm EST / 3 pm PST See you then!
