To whom is the warning given

  • Hebrews 1:1-3; 3:1,12

    • V. 3 …when He had by Himself purged our sins.

      • Whose sins have been purged?

    • 3:1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus,

      • Are partakers of the heavenly calling saved?

    • 3:12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;

To whom is the warning given?

The danger of drifting away is real

Once Saved, Always Saved (The “P” in TULIP)

Perseverance of the Saints states that all who are chosen by God, redeemed by Christ, and given faith by the Spirit are eternally saved. They are kept in faith by the power of Almighty God and thus persevere to the end.

The danger of drifting away is real!

The danger of drifting away is real1

2 Peter 2:20-22

For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: “A dog returns to his own vomit,” and, “a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.”

Cf. 2 Peter 1:10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble;

Watch for the signs

  • Matthew 24:42-44

    • Matthew 26:41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

  • 2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves.

    • Cf. John 3:19-21 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

Watch for the signs

Make an honest assessment

James 1:21-22

21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

Make an honest assessment

Signs you are drifting

Prayer stops being a priority.

Bible study is a nuisance instead of a joy.

Laboring in the Lord’s vineyard is at the bottom of your list.

Attendance begins to wane.

Sin stops bothering you.

Sin once again becomes your practice.

 Proverbs 6:6-11

6 Go to the ant, you sluggard!       Consider her ways and be wise, 7 Which, having no captain,       Overseer or ruler, 8 Provides her supplies in the summer, And gathers her food in the harvest. 9 How long will you slumber, O sluggard?       When will you rise from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber,       A little folding of the hands to sleep— 11 So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler,       And your need like an armed man.

Drifting requires no effort.

Heaven is our goal

1 Corinthians 15:52 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

John 14:1-3 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
