  1. hicholes Los wixárikas o wixáricas (pr. uixáricas), conocidos en español como huicholes, habitan el oeste central de México en la Sierra Madre Occidental, principalmente en los estados de Jalisco, Nayarit y partes de Durango y Zacatecas. Se autodenominan wixárica a la gente en su lengua, a la que llaman wixaritari o vaniuki y que en español se conoce como huichol o lengua huichola), que pertenece a la familia de lenguas uto-aztecas. El etnónimo huichol proviene de la adaptación al idioma náhuatl del autónimowixarika, debido a que en idioma huichol la a puede llegar a oirse como o; r y l son alófonos y la pronunciación de x que era sibilante fue interpretada como africada tz entre los siglos siglos XVII y XVIII (época en que pudo ocurrir el préstamo de la palabra), más la pérdida de la sílaba -ka, dio como resultado huitzol en náhuatl y su castellanización
