Childhood Immunizations
  • Birth to age 2
    • 22 vaccinations (Dtap, Hib, Pneumo, HepB, HepA, IPV, MMR, Varicella)
    • 3 oral doses (Rotavirus)
  • Kindergarten
    • 4 vaccinations (Dtap, IPV, MMR, Varicella)
  • 7th grade
    • 1 or more vaccinations (Dtap)

(Does not include annual flu vaccinations)

Tetanus, Diptheria and Pertussis (Tdap) Tetanus (Td)
  • Given as a childhood series, then a booster is required every 10 years
  • May give booster early if there is a serious injury or risk of infection

Should I get Tdap or Td?
  • Pregnant women are revaccinated with Tdapduring pregnancy to prevent transmission of pertussis (whooping cough) to infants
  • Grandparents, daycare workers, etc. should consider a booster with Tdap if caring for infants
  • A small percentage of people have a serious reaction to pertussis vaccine and require Td

Zostavax (Shingles)
  • One dose suggested after age 60
  • About 50% effective in preventing an episode of shingles (herpes zoster) infection
  • Shingles is caused by a reactivation of the chicken pox virus that is dormant in your body
  • Can cause painful, irritating rash almost anywhere on the body.
  • Sometimes the rash causes long-term, severe pain

  • Helpful hint: check with your insurance/Medicare before getting the vaccination, as there sometimes are payment or reimbursement issues

Pneumococcal (Pneumonia)
  • Primary series given in childhood
  • May be repeated in early adulthood with certain risk factors such as lung disease, diabetes, immune disorders
  • A one-time vaccination, is suggested after age 65

  • Seasonally given in fall of each year
  • Recommended for all over 6 months of age
  • Each year the flu vaccine is different – it is made up of three of four of the flu strains expected to be most prevalent– you need to be revaccinated every year

  • Influenza/Flu is an upper respiratory illness
    • Headache, fever, body aches, cough
  • The “stomach flu” is not prevented by a flu shot – they are two different illnesses!
  • You cannot get Influenza from the vaccination
