Drug Classification • Xanax or Alprazolam belongs to a group of drugs called benzodiazepines but it is also a depressant. • It works by slowing down the movement of chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced which would result in nervous tension or anxiety. • Xanax is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders and anxiety caused by depression.

  5. Methods of Administration • You take Xanax through the mouth i.e. swallowing a pill. Sometimes • people will dissolve it underneath their tongues. • It is not recommended that one takes it was alcohol or Ambien. • Do not crush or chew it either. • Some people will even snort Xanax because the is very fast acting • that way, but this is a very dangerous way to take it.

Short Term Affects • This drug may make you dizzy, drowsy, increase saliva production or change your sex drive. • Other side effects include… • mental/mood changes • slurred speech or difficulty talking • loss of coordination • yellowing eyes or skin • itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat) • severe dizziness • trouble breathing • seizures • trouble walking • memory problems

Long Term Affects • Psychological • Memory impairment (long term) • Short term verbal recall problems • Disorientation • Confusion • Dependence • Hallucinations • Physical • Addiction/Withdraw (if stopped) • Risk of falls and fractures • Slurred speech • Muscle weakness • Lack of coordination • Sedation (3-4 days)

  8. Addiction • Xanax is addictive and withdraw symptoms are sometimes so • severe, it can sometimes lead to death. • Withdrawing from Xanax can cause: • Hallucinations • Feelings of depersonalization • Derealization • Hypersensitivity • Panic Attacks • Mood changes • Body pain/aches • Vomiting

(2010) • According to Forbes, doctors write nearly 50 million prescriptions for Xanax or alprazolam every year which equates to one Xanax prescription every second. • In Florida, it’s a third degree felony to possess any amount of Xanax (even one pill) without a prescription. • In Texas, if you are caught with 28 – 200 grams of Xanax with out prescription, it’s a third degree felony punishable with 2 – 10 years in a state prison and a fine of no more than $10,000.
