Beja - History • It is known that the city of Beja was founded by the Celtics in 400 B.C. • There are rumors that before the domain of the Romans Beja was controlled by the Cartachineses. • But it was in the roman empire the Beja become of some importance and playing a bigger role in the region. • After king D. Afonso Henriques’s men recover the land from the Mouros, he founded the city of Beja in 1517.

Beja - Economy • The district of Beja is a zone very rich of cereals with the most important culture is wheat. • Besides cereal other important cultures are the olive oil, cork and cattle creation. • The sub soil is rich of minerals, such as copper and wolfram. There is also explorations of marmoreal a granite. • Recently, the tourism is more explored with the practice of hunting, nautical sports and in the coast beach.
