  2. Background Information • Francis Drake was born at Plymouth, Devonshire in 1543. • He died in Panama in 1596 and was buried at sea. • An explorer and a military commander. • Had no formal education at all • Lots of ambition and courage • Lived in the great age of piracy Next Page

Voyages • He and his crew were the first Englishman to sail around the globe • The ships’ names are the Pelican (also known as the Golden Hind), Elizabeth, Marigold • The supply ships were the Swan and the Benedict ( also known as the Christopher) • 12 cannons aboard the Golden Hind • There were more than 160 man on the Voyage The Golden Hind (Recreation) Next Page

  4. Purpose of Expedition • To raid and plunder Spanish transport ships returning from the Americas • 1580, he completed the circumnavigation. • He looked for potential customers • Intended to search for the South Pacific continent ??? Why ??? Next Page

Route of Expedition • He started in Plymouth, sailing in the Pelican (after named Golden Hind) on December 1577 with four other ships. • Crossed the Atlantic, and stopped in San Julian in South America • Crosses from Atlantic into Pacific crossing over in the Strait of Magellan • Landed in Mocha, got wounded by an arrow • On the coast of Lima, he captured a Spanish treasure ship. • In Guatulco Drake’s men stole treasure from a Catholic church of the Spanish people. Route of Expedition (continued) • Crosses the Pacific in three months, then landed in Moluccas and takes six tons of cloves. • In Celebes , his cargo of cloves was making the ship heavy, so they throw them overboard. • Crossed the Indian Ocean, takes fresh supplies in Durban. • Rounded the Cape of Hope, and sailed back to Plymouth. • Returns in September 1580 with millions of pounds. Other Notable Occurrences • Francis Drake became a member of Parliament • After his voyage in 1577-1580, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I • The Spanish called him ‘El Draco’ which meant the dragon • Had 25 million pounds which equals 42.5 million dollars • In 1581-1582 he served as mayor Sir Francis Drake being Knighted by Queen Elizabeth I Next Page
