  2. Circumnavigate: v. go around or across something • Many explorers attempted to circumnavigate the world . . . many also failed.

  3. Brigand: n. a robber or bandit

  4. Primeval: adj. belonging to the first/earliest ages Primeval creatures would be terrifying to modern man, particularly if they could eat him.

  5. Schism: n. split or division between parties • A schism between best friends may never be overcome. They may even become enemies forever. • In 1054 the Great Schism separated the Eastern and Western Church.

  6. Paltry: adj. small or meager

  7. Ignoble: adj. not honorable in character or purpose

  8. Vituperate: v. abuse or censure severely

  9. Pedantic: adj. caring too much for formalities; meticulous

  10. Abrogate: v. repeal or do away with

  11. Laconic: adj. concise to the point of being rude
