  2. What is Telehealth? The delivery of health-related services and information via telecommunications technologies.

Missouri Telehealth Network • At the University of Missouri • Mission: increase access & quality, provide education. • Provides Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits for providers in rural Missouri Telehealth Network. • Is a part of the HTRC – Resource Center for telehealth activities in the state and across the nation. • Helps with economic development in rural areas by keeping pharmacy, lab, and x-rays in local communities.

  4. Telehealth / Telemedicine • Is NOT a new service. • IS a new service delivery mechanism. • Increases Access! • Moves information- not people. • Reduces travel costs and other barriers.

  5. Why Telehealth • Clinical Shortages • Maldistribution of providers • Rural / Urban underserved • Aging population • Travel time, cost & hardship • Delayed Treatment • Language barriers • Clinical education programs • Administrative meetings

  10. Lessons Learned • Telemedicine is simply a tool used to deliver health care at a distance. • People are more important than technology. • Telemedicine must be integrated into the everyday way physician’s practice. • It works best in augmenting established referral relationships.

  16. What are Telehealth Resource Centers (TRCs)? • Federally funded through HRSA/ORHP • TRC Grant Program – est. 2006 • Extensive telehealth program implementation experience • 12 Regional TRCs, plus • 1 Telehealth Technical Assistance Center • 1 National TRC- Policy
