  1. Center for Drug Use and HIV ResearchCDUHR-IIIAn Interdisciplinary Approach to HIV and Other Infectious Diseases of Drug Users Sherry Deren, Ph.D., Director Marya Gwadz, Ph.D., Deputy Director New York University College of Nursing Funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Grant No. P30DA011041

  2. What is a NIDA P30 Center? • Provides a research infrastructure to enhance the effectiveness of existing research and foster the development of innovative projects • Criteria: • Thematic integration • Multidisciplinarity • Synergy • High caliber of scientific work

  3. History of CDUHR: High-Risk Drug Use and HIV: Learning from the NYC Epidemic • CDUHR-I (1998-2003): Individual-level factors • CDUHR-II (2003-2008): Social-level factors • CDUHR- III (2008-2013): Interdisciplinary (individual, social and clinical infectious disease) factors

  4. CDUHR-IV (proposed) • Support the goals of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) • Research Translation • Incorporate focus on changing environment (e.g., healthcare delivery and biomedical developments)

  5. Specific Scientific Aims of CDUHR-III • Enhance interdisciplinary research on HIV and related infectious diseases among drug users • Incorporate interdisciplinary research into a broad array of research designs, including epidemiologic, prevention and intervention studies • Continue to monitor the HIV epidemic among drug users, through surveillance and ethnographic methodologies

  6. Growth of CDUHR • CDUHR-I: started in 1998 with 9 projects and 6 investigators at 2 institutions • CDUHR-III: currently has 37 projects and 27 affiliated investigators at 4 institutions: • New York University College of Nursing and other NYU schools and colleges • National Development & Research Institutes, Inc. (NDRI) • Beth Israel Medical Center • John Jay College of Criminal Justice

  7. Structure of CDUHR-III Director’s Office/Administration Director: Sherry Deren (NYUCN) Deputy Director: Marya Gwadz (NYUCN) Theoretical Synthesis Director: Samuel Friedman (NDRI) Deputy Director: David Perlman (BIMC) Infectious Diseases Director: David Perlman (BIMC) Deputy Director: Don Des Jarlais (BIMC) Deputy Director: Madeline Naegle (NYUCN) Interdisciplinary Research Methods Director: Holly Hagan (NYUCN) Deputy Director: Don Des Jarlais (BIMC) Deputy Director: Charles Cleland (NYUCN) Deputy Director: Michele Shedlin (NYUCN) Intervention Research Director: Marya Gwadz (NYUCN) Deputy Director: Ann Kurth (NYUCN) Dissemination Director: Joe Lunievicz (NDRI) Deputy Director: Shiela Strauss (NYUCN) NYUCN = NYU College of Nursing BIMC = Beth Israel Medical Center NDRI = National Development & Research institutes, Inc.

  8. Activities/Services Provided by Cores • Seminars, trainings, interest groups, and other opportunities for discussion and sharing ideas • Consultation for planned or funded projects • Mentor new investigators • Provide centralized services and resources • Coordinate grant proposal review process • Disseminate research findings to service providers • Prepare review articles or other papers important to the field

  9. Current CDUHR-affiliated Projects • Project Topics include: • HIV/HCV Epidemiology/Surveillance • HIV and substance use prevention • Seek, Test, Treat & Retain studies • Treatment issues for HIV positives • Locations include: • Domestic and International • Street, Jails, Treatment services • Populations include: • Youth, families, program staff, communities • IDUs, NIDUs, MSM, other high risk populations

  10. Examples of Current Projects, and How A Center Can Lead to New Research Collaborations

  11. National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Study Funding Source: CDC PI: Holly Hagan (2005-2010) Goal: Assess nationwide trends in HIV infection and risk behaviors for 3 populations at risk for HIV: • MSM (men who have sex with men) • IDUs (injection drug users) • HHR (heterosexuals at high risk)

  12. The 2006-2007 study of HHR found that in one high-risk area (based on poverty and HIV rates), prevalence was 8.6%, with 90% unaware of their HIV infection. Discussions among Center members about this finding led to a new intervention study based on multidisciplinary collaborations.

  13. Peer-Driven Intervention to Seek, Test & Treat Heterosexuals at High Risk for HIV Funding Source: NIDA PI: Marya Gwadz (2011-2016) Goal: Develop and evaluate the efficacy of a multi-level peer-driven intervention to recruit, test, treat and retain high risk heterosexuals in HIV care.
