being a financial planner

being a financial planner. I talked a lot. When I should have been listening. I told them I was FULLY qualified. But that wasn’t the truth. I was taught to sell products. Because “they need to be sold”. I closed the sale. Knowing they didn’t understand.

  1. being a financial planner

  2. I talked a lot... When I should have been listening

  3. I told them I was FULLY qualified... But that wasn’t the truth

  4. I was taught to sell products... Because “they need to be sold”

  5. I closed the sale... Knowing they didn’t understand

  6. I told them I was “Independent”... But was influenced by others who weren’t

  7. I told them I had their interests at heart... But was incentivised to do something else

  8. I was “Jack of all trades”... But “Master of none”

  9. I knew more than they did... And used it to help them make mistakes

  10. I used complex language... When simpler was better

  11. I chased the money... And it usually escaped

  12. I thought my job was to be clever... When it was not to be dumb

  13. And then I discovered financial planning...

  14. And that’s when... ...All the problems started!

  15. I tried to sell the software... People weren’t interested

  16. I told them I was fee-based... That didn’t help me

  17. I sold them a financial plan... They didn’t want a report

  18. I urged them to trust me... They trusted me less

  19. I sold them my values... Which should have been standard

  20. I told them I was now really qualified... They were really not bothered

  21. I sold them financial planning... But they didn’t know what it was

  22. I told them we could achieve their lifetime goals... And they stared at me blankly

  23. And, frustrated... I asked them if I could show them... how to get the life they really wanted... without ever running out of money... or dying with too much...

  24. And all of a sudden... They wanted to know... They were happy to meet... They were happy to share... They were happy to PAY me!

  25. And I realised... It definitely isn’t about a product It isn’t about investments... It isn’t about financial planning... It isn’t even really about the money...

  26. This is the last slide If you haven’t yet worked it out... or into your business... www.brianfoster.co.za
