  2. All About Kelly Siver • My background • Lived in Marlboro for 25 years • Went to Georgian Court College • Masters in Education with a technology certification • My experience - 22nd year teaching at Mar El - 16 years in first grade - 6 years in second grade

All About Nicole Germaine My background -I went to Monmouth University -I studied History, Elementary Education & Special Education My experience - 6th year teaching at Mar El - I have taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade I have worked for 4 summers in the ESY Program with students ages 3-7 -- I am excited to be co-teaching with Mrs. Siver and I look forward to a wonderful school year.

Being A Reader: Word Study Goals: • To recognize and spell high frequency words when reading and writing • To recognize how words are constructed and their spelling patterns • To encourage learners to use spelling strategies for effective spelling Direct instruction Word sorting Spelling HW No traditional Friday spelling tests

Being A Writer Goals: • To communicate effectively through writing • To generate ideas & build writing stamina • To revise and edit for clarify • To learn conventions • To publish & share writing pieces (Narrative, Informational, Persuasive) Teacher Conferences 6 + 1 Traits of Writing (Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Fluency, Conventions, Presentation)

  8. Making Meaning Goals: • To develop comprehension skills through the use of reading strategies • To develop fluency • To develop vocabulary Teacher models strategies Check for understanding(reading road blocks) Fix up strategies IDR & Teacher conferencing

Daily 5 Literacy Centers • Read to Self – good fit books • Read to Someone – fluency & expression • Word Work – practice spelling • Work on Writing – practice makes progress! • Listen to Reading – good literature & fluency Teacher is able to: Meet with groups to reinforce or enrich Meet with students one-on-one

  10. How to Choose “Just Right” Books Look at the cover. Reread the title and the author. Read the blurb in the back. Flip through the book. Read the first page Use the 5 finger rule 5 finger rule 1 finger for each unknown word 0-1 fingers – too easy 2-3 fingers - just right 4-5 fingers – too hard

  11. Math enVision www.pearsonsuccessnet.com • Students will engage in a variety of hands on activities through the use of manipulatives. • Students will learn and apply a variety of problem solving strategies. • Students will learn basic facts and strategies for math computations

  12. Social Studies /Science • Social Studies- Marking periods 1 & 2 Sciences- Marking periods 3 & 4 • Students will engage in a variety of hands on experiments, projects and discussions. • Tests will be announced and study guides will be given

  13. Homework Monday – Thursday 20-30 minutes • Word Sort- phonics/spelling • Math- to reinforce daily lesson • Read for 15-20 minutes daily Students are responsible forbringing home, completing, and returning all homework assigned We strongly believe in fostering independent children

Homework Cont. • Enrich: • Math- Challenge packet (optional), timed math facts • Reading- journal, rewrite endings, read books on independent reading level • Online programs(see teacher page) Reinforce skills: • Math- Flash cards, use manipulatives • Reading-Review word sorts and high frequency words often, read books on independent reading level

Miscellaneous • Afternoon snack- classrooms are nut free • Book Orders- checks only payable to Scholastic. 1 combined check is fine • Class moms and volunteers TBD • Class trips- can sign up to chaperone • Please empty your child’s Home folder daily • No need to sign and return tests • Any problems: Please let us know ASAP
