  2. Setting the Stage • By the 1400’s renaissance ideas were beginning to spread to the rest of Europe • Especially Italian Art

  3. The Northern Renaissance Begins • By the mid 1400’s Europe's population was beginning to grow again. What caused it to shrink? • The Hundred Years War between France and England Ends • Cities grew, and wealthy merchants start to sponsor artists

  4. Artistic ideas Spread • The French King invades Italy and many Italian artists and writers moved north into other parts of Europe

  5. Northern Writers Try to Reform Society • Italian writers moved north and interpreted religious documents • People began to question the teachings of the church now that they better understood them • Erasmus wrote- Praise of Folly • Thomas More wrote- Utopia

  6. Women’s Reform • Most Europeans could not read and write • If the family could afford it they sent there sons to school • Despite major discrepancies women remained socially inferior to men

  7. The Elizabethan Age • In England the Renaissance hit in the mid-1500’s. They were the last to jump on board • Queen Elizabeth I was well educated and greatly supported the development of literature and art in England

  8. Printing Spreads to the Renaissance • The Chinese invented block printing • Johan Gutenberg takes it a step further and invents the printing press • Books become fast and easy to print • They become cheaper and more accessible • More people can read theme and become educated on many topics • Went from taking 5 month to produce a single book to producing 500 in five months

  9. The Legacy of the Renaissance • Art • Sculpture • Secular and Religious writing and Art • Printing • Books • Religious questions

  10. ART • Middle ages art goes away and leads the way for many new techniques

  11. Renaissance Art • Bellini- used new colors and shading

  12. Renaissance Art • Botticelli- mostly religious work, ignored realism • “The Birth of Venus”

  13. Renaissance Art • DaVinci- landscape, light and, and warm colors. He was also an inventory

  14. Renaissance Art • Michael Angelo- sculpture and paintings. Mostly religious, used light and color
