BACKGROUND • Missouri Compromise settled the issue of slavery in Louisiana territory in 1821. • By the 1840s, the US believes it has the duty to expand westward to the Pacific Ocean. • This idea is called Manifest Destiny! • Also by 1840, sectionalism has become a major problem with people taking different views on slavery

  5. WESTWARD EXPANSION • US gets new land after winning the Mexican War in 1848. The land is called the Mexican Cession. • In 1849, the California Gold Rush quickly organizes California and it wants to enter the Union as a free state
