  8. Goals For This Course • Provide ideas for developing regional NARPM-like training • Assist participants in understanding the details and level of planning required for single or multi-day training events • Identify resources to assist with training development

  9. Why Develop a Mini-NARPM? • Greater focus on individual regional needs – by RPMS for RPMs • Network with peers within the region • Meets needs of RPMs and staff that were unable to attend NARPM • Reduced frequency of larger NARPM training program

  11. Preliminary Planning Process • Understand your region’s approval process • Concurrent or parallel discussions with peers and management • Talk to your NARPM representative • Gauge interest of your region • Seek management approval • Consider national and local resources

  13. Where to Start? • Informal conversations with peers • Solicit information at staff meetings • Solicit information in other regional forums or training activities • Use available survey tools • Enlist your RSL & STL • Coordination with regional training coordinator and CEC

Seek Management Input, Approval, and Support • Discuss the benefits • Education, knowledge sharing, networking, resource identification, current and relevant issues • Discuss potential time commitments • For both management and staff • Discuss potential cost considerations • Will there be any costs associated? • Discuss any potential conflicts or concerns • Program targets, field work season, other training activities, etc.

  15. Enlist a Small Development Group • Scale group to the size of your region • Smaller groups preferred to start – can be expanded as regional interest increases • Represents the target audience • Has a current knowledge of regional/national issues • Can be ad hoc or formally identified

Training Examples and Ideas • Identify other regional/national examples from which to build • Build upon or use topics from past NARPM sessions • Use NARPM course evaluations • Seek regional NARPM presenters • Identify other regional training sessions • Seek current and relevant needs within your region

Establish a Timeframe for Planning and Implementation • General rule-of-thumb for planning and implementation • At least one month of planning for every day of training (3 day course = 3 months planning) • Regular planning interactions with progress updates • Be flexible with schedules and logistics • Be prepared for last-minute changes to session topics, instructors, and schedule/logistics
