  1. Conscientization = people critically reflecting on their own or others situation in a way that leads to a deeper understanding of issues of oppression, disempowerment etc. This can be facilitated Problematization = Either through the process of 'conscientization' or other processes, helping others see that what is accepted as 'normal' is actually a problem. These two processes are the essence of advocacy and making something an issue!!

  2. A particular technique that can be used in this process is referred to as "codification". A codification is a 'right-brained' tool for getting at left-brained material. For example to ask a group of clients to "draw a picture" of what its like to be a client. OR to select a song or a poem that describes what it is like. Or ask a group of women who are being moved off of afdc to do a ‘skit’ about their experience!

  3. Then in the group, ask the following question about the pix, song etc. • what is happening here? • Does anything in the picture bother you? • What are the contradictions in the picture? • Who has the power? • Who wins? • Who loses? • Who is helping • Who is sabotaging • In whose interest is this happening • Are there other people who need to be in this picture who are not shown • How can the situation be changed

  4. Whether working with clients, colleagues, community members, the key to codification is getting people to answer the question What is wrong with this picture? Poem? Drawing? Film clip? etc

  5. What do artistic expressions tell us? Drawings of ‘nickels’ by poor children are always larger than drawings Of ‘nickels’ by well-off children

  6. What do the next two drawings tell us?
