  1. The Sun – Our Day Star

  2. Do Now • Pick up your ISN from the desk • Take out your HW from the weekend • Write down tonight’s HW in your planner • Label pages of your ISN: • Page 32: Seasons Quiz • Page 35: What is the structure of the sun?

  3. Our Sun – A Day Star • Why is the sun a DAY STAR? • Formed 4.6 billion years ago – the same time as Earth! • The sun is made up of Helium (He) and Hydrogen (H) gasses.

  4. The Sun’s Layers • Energy is generated in the core of the sun and travels outward through the convection zone and radiation zone • Photons: Charged particles of light

  5. The Sun’s Atmosphere • Photosphere: (photo = light) Light is given off • It takes 10,000 years for light to travel from the core of the sun outward • Chrosmosphere: above the photosphere • Corona: Temperatures are 12,000,000 degrees F! • Solar wind (charged particles) come from the corona • The location of solar storms • http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/labs/lab/sun/1/1/

  6. Surface Features • Sunspots • Cooler areas on the surface of the Sun • Observed by Galileo Galilei • Helped scientists discover that the Sun rotates • Cycles every 10-11 years (last one in 2012).

  7. Flares and Prominences • Blasts from the sun • Solar flares: violent eruptions of gas • Coronal Mass Ejections (CMES): electrically charged gas is ejected from the corona • Can interfere with satellites on Earth • Disrupts cell service and plane navigation • Can cause auroras

  8. Aurora Borealis • http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/news/environment-news/norway-aurora-borealis-vin/

  9. The Sun Video • Summarize the ways in which NASA has been studying the sun in recent years. • http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/video/index.php?id=828

  10. Page 34 of ISN • Summarize what astronomers looked for on the Sun’s surface and what information these items provided about the sun. • Compare and contrast the layers of Earth and the layers of the sun. Sketch the sun an include the layers of the Sun in your journal. • What are space storms and how could they affect you? • Describe the path that a photon would take from the center of the sun’s core outward (you may draw if you wish).

  11. Page 37: How does the Sun Shine? To understand something as large as the sun…. …..we have to start very, very small What can you think of that has a smaller object inside of another? http://htwins.net/scale2/

  12. Atoms • Atoms are the building blocks of matter (anything that takes up space) • They contain: • A proton – a sub-atomic particle with a positive charge • A neutron – a sub atomic particle with no charge • An electron – a sub-atomic particle with a negative charge

  13. Elements • Atoms of the same kind (same number of protons) are called elements • There are 118 elements on the periodic table

  14. Atoms can combine Atoms can combine to create something new. ….just like ingredients can combine to create a cake!

  15. ReactantsProducts! Hydrogen + oxygen Water Ingredients Dessert!

  16. Fusion: The Sun’s Energy • To Fuse = to combine • Combining of two or more atoms • A process that occurs in all stars • Provides a LOT of energy for a small amount of matter

  17. Fusion in the Sun H + H ---------- He + energy Hydrogen atoms combine into Helium and release ENERGY!

  18. Einstein Einstein discovered that mass loss in a reaction can be converted into energy E = mc2 E = energy m = mass c = the speed of light

  19. Aha Connections • Pages 20-21 • Answer the question about motion based on what you learned about the sun today • Answer the question “How does Earth support life” using any information from this week or last.
