  • The fungus Exserohiliumrostratumhas been identified as the pathogen that caused 594 cases of fungal meningitis, stroke due to fungal meningitis, or other central nervous system diseases, along with 26 cases of peripheral joint infections and 39 deaths as of 17 Dec. 2012.
  • The infections were traced to contaminated steroid injections, produced by New England Compounding Center

  • E. rostratumis an opportunistic species, meaning infection is usually associated with some type of compromise to the skin barrier or immunity system.
  • The three Exserohilumspecies that have been reported to infect humans are E. rostratum, E. longirostratum, and E. mcginnisii
