WHAT ARE MANOR COURT ROLES?
  • Records of the courts held by the manor lord.
  • They record disputes
  • They record changes in land holding (Rentals are an example)
  • They record obligations
  • They may list customary obligations and a survey of rents owed (Custumals)

To this court came Henry Shipton of London

in propria persona sua et in plena curia

in his own person and in full court

ille sursum reddidit in manibus domini manerii predicti

he surrendered into the hands of the lord of the manor aforesaid

per virgam secundum conseutudinem manerii predicti unam Rodam terre arabilis

(sive plus sive minus) iacentem in Le Churchfield

by the rod according to the custom of said manor one rod of ariable land …

which rod of land is a part of a certain messuage of said henry Shiptom

Memorandum quod istud burgagium fuit quondam Ricardi Quenyld carpenterii filii Rogeri nativi qui duxit Agnetam Bronemay que fuit filia Ricardi del Fold qui quidem Ricardus factus est postea leprosus et recessit ad domum leprosorum sine herede

Note that this burgage formerly was of Ricard Quenyld, carpenter son of Roger a villein who married Agnes Bronemay who was the daughter of Ricard del Fold who afterwards became a leper and withdrew to a house of lepers without an heir
